Yes, that's it. The last remaining empty retail/leisure unit of City Quadrant. On one side it will face Waterloo Street, on the other Waterloo Square.

Thanks for the photo! Will there be an entrance on both sides or just one? Any ideas?

There's no entrance on Waterloo Street, but there is an entrance in the covered "corridor" between the retail units (ie, just off the corner of Waterloo Street and Westmorland Road, to the right of that photo). There are also double doors opening on to Waterloo Square (behind the blue portakabin in the photo). If memory serves, the original plans for the restaurant that were on the Akbars website showed a café/brasserie area on the Square side with tables outside.

It will be the biggest restaurant in Newcastle, I think. With the mezzanine floor in they were talking about seating for 300.

And what are the prices like? Is it going to be the most expensive curry house in town?

Cheers.

I'm looking forward to Akbars, Ive heard great things... hope it lives up to the hype. To anyone who's been, how does it differ from your 'regular' curry restaurant and why are people prepared to travel so far for it?

Food better than any other curry house you've ever been to.

More choice than any other curry house you've ever been to.

Spectacular surroundings.

Great service.

Cheap.

Akbars is great! The curries are just so different- they do some really unusual tasty curries- even the hot ones are tasty whereas in some Indian restaurants they are just hot with no taste. I love it the way they hang your Naan bread on you table!

The one in Leeds is the best- Manchester not so good. I have high hopes for this restaurant- can't wait for it to open.

The Family Nan - that's just class

I love Akbar's because we dont have anything like that here, it has a more modern setting whilst Indian Restaurants here are more traditional - the more modern one's are very expensive (like Raval's, Sachins). The Atmosphere is good unless its packed, then it can get a bit noisy

I wasn't hungry, then I looked at that website and I am absolutely starving.

Can't wait for it to open.

A few more pics of the work going on at Akbars.

This is the unit they've taken, viewed from Waterloo Street:

Looks like there will be an entrance on Waterloo Street after all:

The side entrance, in the "corridor" leading through to Waterloo Square:

And the entrance on to Waterloo Square:

I'll post more as things move on.

Mate, sorry to disappoint (unless they have changed their business plan) but they are not opening in Newcastle anymore, i've even emailed the bloke ranting and raving as i normally go o the York/Leeds branch and wont travel to boro for one.

So whatever that place is going to be now, it certainly isn't an Akbars.

Yes, we need to know how recent that exchange of emails was. While Akbar's official line was, until very recently, that the Newcastle restaurant was no longer happening, that has reportedly changed in the last couple of weeks.

I just had an Akbars in York last week and it was the best curry I have ever had, delicious and the family naan was brilliant as was the service. For 4 of us including drinks it was £52 so not unreasonable.

Last night I went to the days of the raj, one of the most highly rated indians in the N.East and paid £55 for 2, OK food but poor service and environs and nowhere near as tasty as Akbars, I really hope that Akbars are opening in Newcastle soon.
