It's probably because they aren't touching the facade of the original building, and the new build is hidden behind it.

Oh right, if they arn't touching the facade of the original building, and it is hidden then I see no problem.

P.S. I'm well aware that my post sounds sarcastic, I assure though that it was not my intent, and I am being seriouse.

Quite an interesting planning application... "Listed Building Application: Erection of memorial in the form of a wave to Lord Collingwood" This is to be located at the land adjacent to Broad Chare Chambers.

intriguing. hopefully it will look a bit better than in the render - which is quite cartoonish.

It's where Broad Chare meets Dog Bank, roughly here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&...-8&sa=N&tab=wl

The renders/model do look a little sketchy, but it's promising I guess, if slightly unoriginal. I'd be interested to know what material(s) they had in mind.

Still, if nothing else it'd do something with that blind corner that's probably just a place for drinkers to take a pee currently.

Looks interesting - if it turns out rubbish then its not so bad because it is a bit out of the way BUT if it looks good then i will probably be dissapointed because it will be in the wrong location

glad you brought that site up Chris, as we can also discuss it in this thread. the site was planned for an eight storey apartment block and i think has pp for this. atm it remains an empty plot bordered in by security fencing, after the previous pub The Carlisle (which had itself been closed for decades) was knocked down. i'm sure NH or Maxtoon et al will have some more info on the old pub.

the latest news was that the site failed to sell in auction in London after the previous owners Kingsway pulled out so looks dead in the water until someone purchases the site.

The actual 'latest' information that I have on this development, is the below article from the Journal of 28th November 2007. This is quite some time ago now, and despite the headline, I can confirm that the site was NOT sold at that auction, as Johnny also says in his post. What has happened since then, I am not aware.

The newspaper article is quite useful though, as it gives a bit of background/photos of the old 'Carlisle Hotel', and of the proposed development . .

That developement in the Chronicle seems interesting, but I would imagine would look fairly basic, and in the end fairly cheap when it was complete.

Not sure if this warrants its own thread, also I know it was mentioned in a thread previously. It does say a decision has been made, however does not state what.

The name Half Moon Inn suggests to me that it could also be a hotel, though that is now a common name for a pub these days.

It looks a really interesting building, not sure what to make of it with little pictures released though. I was starting to think that NCC were allowing more modern but still simple buildings be built, untill i relised it was on the other side of the Tyne, serves me right for being so stupid I guess.

Came across this advert in yesterdays (10th January 2010) Journal, Commercial Property supplement. A very interesting small building which would make a great . . . something!!

What could it become, I wonder?

I think there was an application a few years back to turn this into a takeaway - thankfully it was refused. Having said that, I'm not sure what else it could be!

@NH, that building on the Swing Bridge is very simple, but a beautifully elegant building. However, the stonework on the ground floor (the view in your pic) is terribly eroded and needs some heavy restoration. I wonder if the NewcastleGateshead Initiative can provide some funding, like the Gateshead Townscape Schemes that they're doing with The Central Bar etc.
