I'm so glad the Hertz depot is being kept.

It is surely a jewel in the crown of local architecture...

Just as they cut through a live electric cable, big bang and flash.

3pm - 6th December

Not sure how long this is going to take to sort.

There was a cable across the path for quite a while and its only now I realise it was live all the time.

They struggled with a large tank which was next to the Hertz wall.

They have shielded the wall in polythene and are backfilling with the demolished bricks.

Edit : 10th December at about 15:00

18 December

Just noticed this sign at the upper end of Pottery Lane site, but don't know what it related too.

This was 14:00 today - !9th December.

All machinery and cabins removed. I guess whatever asbestos which needed to be removed has gone.

The building /construction industry will have started their 2 week winter holiday and it is usual for all plant and machinery to be removed back to their plant yards.

They have created a path between the two sites to allow emergency escape from West 1

There is a new sign for the Offices above the Stephenson Quarter Car Park

Some lovely bits of structural ironwork and masonry... hopefully they will make their way to an architectural salvage yard and find use in something else.

Cookson's Lane I believe it's called.

Just about the same view from 2010

A new one for me, cannot say Cookson's Lane has come onto my radar before.

A quick Google throws up some interesting pieces of information though:

1. I recently posted an On This Day In History' piece on the Train Crash at St Bedes Junction - 17th December 1915 @ http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=1311
One of those killed was Andrew Davison Chipchase, 54, tripe preparer, in business at Cookson's Lane. He resided at 81 Broughton Road, South Shields.

2. Couple of images on the Newcastle City Libraries Flickr Photostream:

Newcastle Libraries

Type : Photograph Medium : Print-black-and-white Description : A view of no. 4 Cookson's Lane Newcastle upon Tyne taken c.1935. The view shows the front and the end of the house. A stable is below the house and sanitary accommodation is on the opposite side of the lane to the house. The gable end of the house is shored up with planks of wood.

3. Some entries in Trade Directories:

1921 and prior isn't listed in Kelly's
1947 Kelly's - Jas Dixon, Horse Dealer
1959 Kelly's - Dodds & Bedford Ltd, Slaughterhouse (still there in 1968)
