2 weeks or so back when it rained hard for the last time, for the first time when all other modes of transport slowed down, railways ran on time, not one service was cancelled, it left commuters stunned and relieved. The locals are appreciated during such times

CR considers halting fast trains at Parel
Manthan K Mehta,TNN | Aug 19, 2014, 03.17 AM IST

MUMBAI: Central Railway (CR) has decided to examine the feasibility of halting some fast locals at Parel station, which has %witnessed a considerable rise in passengers with the area's grown into a business hub.

Mukesh Nigam, divisional railway manager for Mumbai division, said, "We will study if halting fast trains at Parel will hold up traffic on the through lines." Even if the Parel halt is introduced, he added, the halt at Dadar will not be eliminated because that will affect "traffic movement". CR will weigh MP Arvind Sawant's suggestion of halting trains at both Dadar and Parel.

Parel serves as an interchange station for those wishing to switch over from Western Railway from the adjacent Elphinstone Road station and vice-versa.

CR has decided to start work on laying fifth and sixth lines between Kurla and Parel. As part of this project, it wants to build a terminus at Parel for suburban trains, but the proposal has been stuck for want of approval from the railway board.

harbour-line-to move-to alternating-current-by june-2015

http://www.asianage.com/mumbai/harbour-line-move-alternate-current-june-2015-173

According to the Central Railway (CR), not only will the line between Kurla and CST be converted from Direct Current (DC) of 1,500 kilovolts to Alternate Current (AC) of kilovolts by the end of this year, but Harbour line will also be converted to AC by June 2015.
CR General Manager, Sunil Kumar Sood said, “We will start running the AC trains from CST on January 1, 2015 after which we will finish conversion of the Harbour line as well by June.”
Sood said that currently they are working on a number of locations simultaneously, replacing thick overhead lines for the conversion. “Other than the wires we are also putting insulators under eight bridges, like Currey Road, so that there will be enough cushioning to avoid the wires from getting stuck to the bridges,” added Sood.
The CR had previously failed to meet the last two deadlines of May and August of this year, to complete the conversion.
The immediate and most important advantage of the conversion will be that new rakes or trains can be introduced into the suburban.“We are operating on DC rakes whose manufacturing has stopped since 1998, so we could not buy any new trains as we had not converted to AC. Once the conversion is done then we will be able to run the new rakes and dispense off the old ones,” said a railway official.
The Harbour line, that has the oldest rakes in the Mumbai suburban will be given a priority and the work is set to begin from December.“The Harbour will be getting 36 AC trains from the 72 new ones slated to arrive from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai,” added the official.
The Western Railway (WR) had converted to AC on February 5 in 2012.

currey-road-get-second-foot-overbridge

http://www.asianage.com/mumbai/currey-road-get-second-foot-overbridge-861

If all goes well, the cheek-by-jowl dash on the solitary foot overbridge (FOB) at Currey Road during peak hours could soon be a thing of the past. The Central Railway (CR) has called for tenders to construct the much-needed second FOB at the Kalyan end of the station.
The tender for the new FOB, which comes after a delay of almost four years, will set back the CR by Rs.1.5 crore. The tender for the 3.66-metre wide and 15-metre long FOB will be finalised by the end of September. “After the tender is finalised we will start work in October and the FOB will be open to public by March 2015,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
“The FOB will allow commuters to exit to the NM Joshi Marg, Saath Rasta, and Mahalaxmi. Earlier we were toying with the idea of building FOB in the middle, but it was not feasible from the point of engineering as the distance between the two steps would have to be over 4 inches, which is dangerous if someone falls,” added the official.
Another reason for the delay was that despite the BMC paying the CR Rs.1.17 crore in 2010, a ticket counter was not included as part of the blueprints, “We have overcome the problem of the ticket counter as we will install two Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) instead.”
Alok Mishra (45) a banker, who travels from Kalyan to Currey Road said that he would often wait on the platform for the rush to decrease, but by that time another wave of commuters would get off from the next train even before the crowd from the previous train had subsided, he said. “It is a nightmare to get on the FOB as my wallet has been flicked twice during the morning rush hour. If another FOB comes it will be a huge relief.”

two-escalators-cst-by december

http://www.asianage.com/mumbai/two-escalators-cst-december-842

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) will get escalators in December this year. They will be constructed on platform numbers one and two and are to be incorporated into the work of extension of Harbour platforms from nine to 12 coaches by the Central Railway (CR) and Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC).
CR officials say that since the 12-coach extension work would require authorities to shut down platform numbers one and two of the Harbour line and 50 per cent of services would not be available as reported by The Asian Age on August 20, escalators will now be constructed on the two platforms.
“We will be constructing the escalator on platform number one and MRVC will be constructing the one on platform number two. We are also talking to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to see if it can fund the third one, in place of the stairs that take the commuters to the Anjuman-I-Islam school,” said a CR official on condition of anonymity.
The CR currently has nine escalators on its line, and there has been a huge demand for starting at least two at CST. “Earlier, we couldn’t have thought of doing this work because it would require too much time and we would have had to shut down the platforms completely — which would have not gone down well with the commuters. But since the work on extending the platforms will be shutting the platforms down for three days, we jumped at the chance to do this,” added the official.

How many emus are going to be alloted to the city, acc to this year's budget Nothing this year but 72 will be inducted from next year, and 5. How many stations have both parking and automatic ticket vending machines.Harbour line has parking facilities on all stations. WR and CR has parking distributed evenly, not all the stations have parking. ATVMs are available on all stations
2 lines? you mean extension of harbour line from Andheri to Goregaon then yes work is in progress, Oshiwara station is also been added to WR network. Another line from Seawoods to uran is progressing well. Work can be seen happening on Palm beach road 24/7.

first-step-taken-towards-making-vasai-an-outstation-train-terminal-

http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/repo...ng-vasai-an-outstation-train-terminal-2013329

The Western Railway, for the first time ever, will be running trains originating and ending from Vasai, in what officials said, is the first step towards making the station a full-fledged railway terminus on the lines of Bandra or Kurla.

The WR announced the running of 12 Ganapati specials between Vasai Road and Ratnagiri from August 26 to September 9. These trains will halt at Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda and Sangameshwar stations, said WR officials.

With two termini, at Bandra and Mumbai Central, currently seeing 60-odd trains a day between them, and demand set to increase with every passing festival season, another terminal is need of the hour.

The WR general manager Hemant Kumar, in a press interaction, agreed that the time to think of a new terminus had come. "This city will need another terminus because our operations are increasing every passing year and the Bandra terminus and Mumbai Central will soon reach saturation point," said Kumar.

Kumar added that with the amount of land required for a terminus running into several hundred acres, the chances of it being anywhere within the city would be remote. "Studies will have to be done to find out where we can find a plot good enough for a terminus," said Kumar.

While WR officials refused to officially name any station as one that could be converted into a terminus, unofficialy, they agreed that under current circumstances Vasai looks to be the best bet. Last year WR had written to the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation to look at the prospect of making Vasai a terminus that can handle both long-distance and suburban trains.

"A terminus would need several hundred acres of land which is not available anywhere along the route except Vasai. Mira Road does have the salt pan lands but getting that would require lots of environmental clerances. Infact a plan to have a depot on the salt pans at Mira Road for the shelved elevated Churchgate-Virar corridor didn't make too much headway with the railways and state government because of the environmental factor," said an official.

Moreover, Vasai is on the connector line between WR and CR which runs from Vasai to Diva and allow trains from the north to cross onto CR or even Konkan Railway and onto the southern parts of the country. "This line would however require strengthening and a new corridor would need to be added to make Vasai a full-fledged terminal," said a senior WR official.

The consensus among WR officials is that since the work will require hundreds of acres of land and several hundred crore of rupees and since building a terminal takes almost over a decade, it is best that work on its feasibility starts now.

"This starting of long-distance trains from Vasai is a good start," said the official.

MUMBAI: The MMRDA will construct a 605m skywalk connecting Thane station and Vitawa (Kalwa). It is expect to benefit more than 25,000 commuters and prevent accidents caused by crossing of tracks by Vitawa residents.

The foundation stone for the skywalk, expected to cost Rs 23 crore, will be laid down by deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Monday. Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director (PR), MMRDA, said, "There is no safe passage to cross the Thane creek for commuters travelling to and from Vitava village. Using the skywalk, citizens will be able to reach the station in five minutes, which at present takes 30 minutes."

Proposed-Panvel-Karjat-track-will-help-Naina-residents-too

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...-Naina-residents-too/articleshow/41117498.cms

NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (Naina) project got an extra boost with the state government's in-principle nod for double-laning the track between Panvel and Karjat. The elevated corridor between Kalwa and Airoli is also on the cards.

The project, based on the people's participation model of sharing land to develop a mega city of 600 sq km, is close to the new airport in Panvel taluka. Around five of the 23 villages which will be rehabilitated as part of the airport project, are part of the interim development plan in Raigad district. The villagers will also benefit, along with other commuters, from the Rs 1,473-crore double-laning railway project, which will connect the fast growing Panvel area with Thane, Kalyan, Karjat and the satellite city.

The urban development department (UDD) in June intimated the railway board that the state government would share the 50% of the cost that will be further split equally between MMRDA and City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco). Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), a public sector undertaking of the Union ministry of railways, will pay the remaining expenses.

This project is part of the MUTP-III and will be implemented by MRVC for the railway ministry. Cidco sources said, "We are yet to receive a formal letter from the state government, but written communications by the state government to the Centre have been marked to us as well. Once we get direct communication, the board will take up the case for approving the project cost.''

This apart, the city commuters will also get two new suburban stations at Bonkode and Dighe on the Trans Harbour track, as MRVC has agreed to include Bonkode station in its 2-km-elevated corridor project from Airoli to Kalwa.

Cidco will not have to spend any money in this project, estimated at Rs 336 crore, as the cost will be shared between MRVC and MMRDA.

The station at Bonkode will enable commuters to board the Thane-bound train along the current route. "The alignment for the elevated corridor along with the location of Dighe station needs to be worked out," said a Cidco official.

Former NCP MP, Sanjeev Naik said, " I am happy that my demand for the two stations on the Trans Harbour route was sanctioned by the state government. I will meet the Union railway minister to expedite the project."
