Thankyou Cul for this interesting thread.Ive never really thought about chimmeys before.Unfortrunately I saw the Mt Isa Chimmney late at night while passing through the city.I never saw it in daylight

I remember the power station in Pymont back in the 70s as a child and in the 80s when I grew up.It had 4 tall chimmeys on it.A very imposing structure on the landscape during its day.

It was dismanteld in 1991 I think.

Do you or any of the other forumers have any picutures of it?

^ its the new estate in Randwick.

BTW, when i was out this week trudging up and down george st on a mission, i noticed work being done to one of the greatest stacks in Oz. The 200ft Mining museum stack (2nd tallest in oz) looks like is being repointed.
Last night on ch7 news there was an article on it about its restoration.I reckon its in bloody good nick as its NEVER been operational. When completed in 1903, the power station was deemed redundant on completion due to progressive technology. So its never had heat/gases to effect it.

^lol, well 100 years ago it was pefect place! Its the Burraga mines 50km south of Bathurst. The copper mine started in 1878 and was abandoned in 1905. The landscape consist of planted pines which gives in a North American feel.

yes, i remember them. as far as industrial architecure goes, the power station was awesome. huge boiler house (50m) as high as any skyscraper in Sydney, the metal stacks rising through them to 106m high, tallest metal stacks in oz. they were built 1955 and demolished in 1994 to make way for Star City casino.
the soot from chimneys used to float down on terraces clothes lines.

heres some pix of demolition

I used to work at the Lead Smelter at M.I.M in the early 90's and went inside the big Stack. Looking up made me dizzy as it was hard to judge how far it went up.The concrete section is only a support for a metal flue and is large enough to contain a second flue if needed. The Stack has an estimated life span of 1000 years, when wind erosion will probably cause it to fail!

wow. interesting. yes i read how the concrete section is basically a shell for the internal flue. Its been the tallest self-supported structure since 1978 until 2004 when Eureka eclipsed the 274m height.
dont think we will see another higher chimney in Australia, unless Envirmission pull there fingers out and build the solar tower, which isnt actually a chimney but a shell for hot air.

cheers

well aussie steve has just given me the worst news ive heard in years.
The landmark brick chimney out at Kodak Plant at Coburg is being demolished as we speak! the 60m/200ft circular brick stack is/was the tallest ever built in Vic and currently was 3rd tallest in Australia! Also tallest circular brick chimney in Australia.
aussie steve drove past last week and noticed it half demolished. i just cant believe such a landmark like this stack was given green light for demo? why didnt have ANY heritage value? did anyone know it was tallest brick stack in vic? it looks sound condition to me.
im contacting moreland council to enquire. im pissed.
aussie steve pic from last year

just had a chat to the assessing officer involved with Kodak plant revelopment.
the Moreland Council actually wanted the chimney and other bldgs to be given heritage protection and tried very hard, even recomending it with Heritage Council of vic. but in the end the contamination of most structures was the death knell for the old structures. They weighed up economic options and the bldgs lost out. When i told her that the stack was the tallest brick chimney ever buit, in vic, she couldnt believe it. (only the Clifton hill shot is higher which isnt a chimney). also 3rd tallest stack in oz.
She really misses it already from her window.
She wants my info and diagrams to add to its file, so one day it can be included in a plaque or description on the significance.

the tallest ever chimneys to be demolished in australia happened TODAY at Swanbank A power station near Ipswich!
The 3 x 122m stacks were imploded and tumbled down simultaneously. i saw it on ch10. pretty spectacular.
this pic shows the chimneys (3 on right). the 2 on left (137m) are part of B power station and wil stay.
