I say this now:

PLEASE STICK TO CROATIAN MOTORWAYS.

CROATIAN MOTORWAYS DO NOT GO THROUGH PLACES LIKE MONTENEGRO, ALBANIA, SERBIA, SLOVENIA, GREECE, NIGERIA, CANADA, KAZAKHSTAN, OR NEW ZEALAND.

Therefore, please refrain from posting pictures of construction projects or posting news of project proposals from those countries.

HOWEVER, if there is a dilemma and somebody asks, for example, "When is Slovenia going to finish its motorways towards Croatia?", something like a map that Edolen posted on the previous thread and/or a picture proving construction is taking place IS ACCEPTABLE.

But DO NOT come to this thread and ARBITRARILY start posting maps or routes or pictures of motorways from OTHER countries.

This thread is for CROATIAN motorways.

That's why you saw a construction site on the ringroad itself, because they are building a new interchange. That small stretch of road (featuring a 1.5-kilometre 6-lane tunnel with an exit inside the tunnel) will be built by the end of 2007 (construction started in 2003). The construction itself, much like the construction of the motorway over Trojane, is taking so long because the geology of the hill that the tunnel is going through is very unfavourable for construction and the digging progress is very slow because of it.

Here's a nice map to illustrate what I'm talking about:

Green - built
Red - U/C
Yellow - U/C
Grey - preparation work for construction
Blue - planned

Anyway, there are only 11 kilometres of motorway missing, not 20 as you stated, and out of those 11, 2 kilometres are those viaducts and tunnels right after the end of the current motorway from Ljubljana (the construction site you said you saw). The other 10 kilometres, however, will not be a simple addition of another carriageway like these 2 kilometres are. Those 10 kilometres which are missing will not follow the current road and will take their own path. As far as I know, parts of those 10 kilometres are already under construction with other parts starting construction within the next couple of months. The entire section is to be built by 2008.

And the state of the Karavanke Tunnel (after 15 years still only one tube) is why I was not very pleased with the fact that only one tube of the Mala Kapela and Sveti Rok tunnels was built at first. The fact is that these projects tend to be put on the backburner if they're built the way they are and you may not see a second tube for 20 years, possibly even more. I can guarantee you that there will be no plans for the second tube of the Karavanke Tunnel for the next 5 years at least. The fact that the tunnel is in two countries makes things only worse. However, the amount of traffic going through Karavanke does not warrant any accelerated construction of the second tube, and with Schengen (the elemination of border controls) I believe there will be even less waiting at the tunnel, so I'm pretty confident there will be no major delays (well, except during some critical summer weekends) at Karavanke.

Also, the reason Slovenia hasn't been building motorways at such great speed is because they are not critical for the prosperity of the country, and in fact, spending too much money on motorways at once would damage our macroeconomic situation. That said, there is also the problem of the NPIA (the construction programme), which was devised in 1994, at the height of the Balkan wars. Therefore, the connections to Croatia were not a priority at the time and the results can be seen today. While the A1 is almsot entirely completed, serious construction on the A2 has only started a couple of years ago (the entire motorway will be finished by 2008) and the A4 towards Gruškovje is only just beginning to go U/C but not over its entire length yet.
thank you for this great mini-presentation and explanation, it was a pleasure to read
