An-32 | Light Multipurpose Aircraft

The An-32 light military transport multi-purpose aircraft can be operated in various climate conditions, including hot climate (up to + 50°C) and from the mountain airfields (up to 4500 m elevation).
The main aircraft purpose is to transport cargoes over short and medium range air routes. It can be used for carrying military personnel, aerial delivery of paratroopers and palletized and non-palletized cargoes. Its ambulance version can be used in missions of Emergency Ministry.
The aircraft has a high maneuverability for flights to mountain based airfields with difficult approaches.

The aircraft crew consists of three persons: two pilots and a navigator. An extra seat and flight engineer workstation can be equipped, if necessary.

The following An-32 versions have been designed:
- An-32B aircraft for commercial airlift;
- An-32P fire fighting aircraft, using 8 tons of fire suppression liquid.
These airplanes were certified by UKRAVIATRANS in 1995.

The An-32B-100 is a new variant of the An-32B aircraft and has been developed as a modernized variant. The new variant differs from its predecessor as follows:
- take-off weight increased to 28.5 tons, and payload increased to 7.5 tons;
- mounting of AI-20D engines series 5M for use of the aircraft in regions with a moderate climate and low airfield elevations;
- take-off power – 4200 horse power
- emergency power – 5180 horse power
- increase of flight range with maximum payload
This aircraft also has improved economics due to the increased overhaul life of its engines.

At present more than 250 aircraft An-32 are being operated in countries with adverse climate conditions, including India, Sri-Lanka, Bangladesh, Columbia, Peru, Mexico, Afghanistan, African countries, etc.

An-32P Firekiller

This aircraft was developed on the basis of the An-32 commercially produced transport aircraft and it is capable to perform the following missions for the forests conservation and protection:
- extinguishing the forest fires with the special fire liquid;
- airdropping the smoke jumpers, their equipment, special aids, equipment and cargoes to the area of forest fire.
The design performance of the aircraft have been confirmed during more than 10 years of operation.
An-32P airplanes were used to extinguish the high-elevated forest fire in the vicinity of Yalta (Ukraine). The experience of their application (about 100 flights over mountain terrains) showed a high efficiency of these aircraft.
Three aircraft An-32P were sent to Portugal for the experimental operation. A high intensive work (each airplane used to perform up to 10 or even 12 flights daily) resulted in a total of 545 fire fighting flights. The performance and fire fighting effectiveness of the aircraft were highly appreciated by the specialists who participated in the test operation.
In absence of fires, the aircraft can be converted (within the airfield conditions) into a standard cargo variant for airlift.
The aircraft has the following main features:
- high degree of structure and systems reliability, operational safety proved during a long service of the An-32 basic aircraft version;
- possibility to operate from the unpaved airfields due to the landing gear design, low pressure tires and high arrangement of the engines that eliminates the penetration of foreign objects into the air intake;
- high thrust-to-weight ratio allowing to fly with a curved trajectory over the mountain terrain;
- autonomous operation that allow to start the engines with the aid of APU;
- capability to fly in adverse weather conditions.
At present the aircraft is serially produced at the ANTONOV Serial Plant in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Antonov An-124 Ruslan

The Antonov An-124 Ruslan /Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-124 "Руслан"/ is a heavy cargo aircraft, designed by the Antonov design bureau in Kyiv. The An-124 is the biggest serial heavy cargo aircraft in the world and world's second largest airplane /Antonov An-225 - the number 1 in the world/. The An-124 has a double-deck fuselage layout. On the upper deck, there is the cockpit and relief crew compartment and the cargo attendants cabin. The lower deck is a pressurized cargo compartment. The construction and dimensions of the forward and rear cargo doors, closed with ramps, ensure quick and easy loading/unloading operations. The onboard ceiling mounted cranes allow loading/unloading without ground equipment. The multi-wheel landing gear with rough-field capability, two APUs and mechanized loading enable independent operation of the aircraft from poorly equipped airfields. Simplicity, reliability and safety of the aircraft operation are ensured by the redundancy and computerization of its systems.
The uniqueness of the An-124 have been proved through commercial operations which have opened up new segments of the air cargo market: the transportation of oversized and extra-heavy cargo. The An-124 has been used to deliver 90 ton hydraulic turbines, the Liebherr large dimension mobile crane, the USA Euclid mine truck, the fuselage of the Tu-204 passenger aircraft, a 109 ton locomotive, General Electric GE90 aircraft engines, various combat vehicles, Lynx anti-submarine helicopters, a spaceship in its container and other unique cargoes. It rescued refugees and people suffered from natural disasters, transported tanks and Christmas trees, elite fast horses and cruise yachts, concert equipment and reconnaissance aircraft, banknotes and pure gold. The list of its cargo is endless – in this sense it can be called as the most universal airplane in the whole history of aviation.
An-124 often carries cargo which cannot be delivered with other transport. For example, only Ruslan was able to return a relic to the people of Ethiopia. It carried this relic -- the granite obelisk from the grave of the ruler of the powerful kingdom of former times situated in the north of Ethiopia – from Italy to Ethiopia. Transportation of the water deminiralizer weighing 72 t by An-124-100 to Marshall Islands was much appreciated by the government of this state.

The An-124-100 commercial aircraft has been developed on the basis of the An-124 'Ruslan' heavy military transport aircraft. It is the biggest serial heavy lifter in the world. It is intended for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo and various special-purpose vehicles. In 1992, ANTONOV obtained the Type Certificate for the An-124-100. The aircraft meets the noise level requirements of Part III, Appendix 16, of the ICAO regulations, requirements relating to emissions of aviation engines, accuracy of piloting, flights under conditions of short vertical separation spacing, etc.
The Аn-124-100М-150 version includes the main components of the Аn-124-100 program development:
- payload increased from 120 tons to 150 tons;
- take-off weight increased from 392 tons to 402 tons;
- flight range increased, including for cargo of 120 tons from 4650 km to 5400 km;
- aircraft assigned service life is increased to 24,000 flight hours;
- works on its extension up to 50 000 flight hours /~10 000 flights/ service life are being performed;
- the new PO-500 schedule of maintenance has been introduced (maintenance every 500 flight hours);
- onboard crane equipment providing loading-unloading operations of a single piece of cargo up to 40 tons weight;
- fuselage structure had been strengthened to enable airlift of a single piece of cargo up to 150 tons weight;
- Navigation System and radar have been updated;
- digital anti-skid braking system allowing to reduce landing distance up to 30% have been installed;
- crew reduced from 6 to 4 members, and the comfort level of the crew rest cabin has been improved;
- military oxygen equipment has been exchanged for the civil one;
reinforced wheels and tires have been installed;
- new devices for engine control have been installed;
- modernized systems of reverse control and engine vibration state monitoring have been developed;
- the SRPPZ-2000 ground proximity warning system installed;
- A826 inertial navigation system upgraded;
- Enhanced observation (EHS) has been applied.
In 2007 the An-124-100M-150 obtained an Annex to the Type Certificate issued by Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee (AR IAC) and an updated Type Certificate was obtained for the An-124-100 aircraft issued by State Aviation Authority of Ukraine. AR IAC issued an Annex to the Type Certificate for the An-124-100, which confirms extension of rated service life up to 50,000 flight hours, 10,000 flights, 45 years. Initially 'Ruslans' assigned service life was 25 years. So, the aircraft has obtained the second life. It will continue operation in the market of oversized and extra-heavy cargo air transportation.
ANTONOV Company is working on modernization of the An-124.
Technical requirements for the An-124-200 modernized military transport as well as the An-124-300 with increased fuel consumption qualities, which will be proposed for serial production, are being developed.
Zaporozhye IVCHENKO-PROGRESS Engine Design Bureau (Ukraine) had fulfilled works to improve reliability, gas-dynamic stability and service life of the D-18T engine series 3. Development of the D-18Т series 4, 3M with digital control system of FADEC type, as well as D-18Т series 5 is in progress.
According to timetable, the first modernized aircraft will rise into the sky in the end of 2013.

No need for a second aircraft of this class. One aircraft fulfills all orders for transportation of oversized & ultra-heavy cargo.

An-225 Mriya | The largest aircraft in the world

The Antonov An-225 Mriya is a unique ultra-heavy cargo aircraft, designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Kyiv. The An-225's name, Mriya (Мрiя) means 'Dream' in Ukrainian.

The aircraft has been created to perform the following missions:
- transportation of the wide-range of cargo (large-sized, ultra-heavy, long-size) with total weight up to 250 t.;
- intercontinental non-stop airlift of cargoes weighting 180−200 t;
- transportation of a heavy large-size single pieces with weight up to 200 t on the external store.
The aircraft is capable to transport the unique cargoes outside the fuselage which dimensions do not allow to place them at the other land-base vehicles and aircraft. There is an appropriate load security system to attach these cargoes to the fuselage.
In 2000 modernization of the An-225 was started. The aim was use of the airplane for transportation of commercial cargoes. The decision had been taken due to many applications sent to Antonov Airlines for transportation of cargoes heavier than the An-124-100 Ruslan’s payload. Since that till present, the airplane has been performing commercial transportations in the fleet of Antonov Airlines, transport subdivision of ANTONOV Company.
The aircraft has the spacious cargo compartment with length of 43,32 m, width of 6.4 m and height of 4.4 m, that allows carrying a variety of cargoes inside. For instance:
- sixteen standard aeronautical containers of UAC−10 type;
- 50 cars;
- single piece of cargoes up to 200 t (turbines, generators, dump trucks − Belaz, Kamatsu, Euclid, etc.).
Mriya has set up 240 world records including transportation of the heaviest cargo with mass of 253 tons, the longest cargo having length of 42,1 m. But the main thing is that Mriya serves people reliably. The airplane repeatedly participated in humanitarian operations. Thus in October, 2009 the An-225 performed several flights on delivery generators to Samoa. They were necessary for renewal of work of Satala electric station damaged by tsunami. Only spacious cabin of the An-225 could accommodate ten 12-tons generators at once. Each of them was as large as 6-meters container. Felise Kaisia, representative of the Centre on extraordinary situation of interior troops of Samoa, said: “Generators were fully destroyed by the waves, that is why electric station in the centre of Satala which supplies energy to all eastern coast had been stopped. By this reason namely delivery of new generators in the shortest terms was so necessary”.
In February 2010 'Mriya' transported large-size construction machinery (bulldozers, trucks, tractors, loaders) for liquidation of aftermath of earthquake on Haiti. They chose 'Mriya' taking into account necessity of urgent delivery. Its spacious cabin only could contain such a large cargo.
In March 2011 'Mriya' transported to Japan humanitarian cargoes, generators and technique with total mass of 140 t.

In 2009 works on the extension of the aircraft life time up to 25 years as well as on upgrading avionic and other equipment were performed.

The Mriya is a truly massive aircraft! I wonder, for that size, what is the maximum range of the aircraft if it is fully loaded with cargo? And by the way, will there be a passenger version of any of those massive cargo aircraft?

Dang, the weight sure reduces the aircraft's maximum range indeed. And I suspect the maximum range of 15,400km can be achieved when the aircraft is carrying nothing on board, correct?
