An-140

The An-140 regional aircraft is intended for passenger and mixed cargo/passenger transportations. The An-140 is the substitute for the An-24 that has been operated for about forty years. On April 25, 2000, Ukraviatrans issued the Type Certificates for An-140 and its modification An-140-100.
The An-140 aircraft has high fuel efficiency. It can be operated in a wide range of the airfield heights and climate conditions, under good and adverse weather conditions, by day and night.
The An-140 aircraft has a high wing position, standard tail configuration and two wing-mounted ТV3-117VМА-SBМ1 turboprop engines. The AI9-3B auxiliary power unit installed at the rear-fuselage provides the independent aircraft operation from the unpaved airfields. A high level of comfort of the passenger compartment has been achieved by selecting the optimum ratio between the volume of the compartment and the service premises, favorable climatic conditions, a well-matched lighting and other factors. The luggage & cargo holds with a total volume of 9.1 cubic meters are situated under the passenger compartment’s floor and in the rear part of the fuselage. Their volume is 1.3-1.5 times more than that of other airplanes of the same class. It is possible to accommodate about 1.84 t of cargo in the luggage & cargo holds. The aircraft is able to carry palletized cargoes it the front part of the passenger compartment instead of the removable front seat rows. To provide this transportation the aircraft has a cargo door on starboard, the compartment’s floor is reinforced and the aircraft is equipped with the appropriate removable equipment.
The Аn-140 aircraft has passed the complete cycle of the Certification Test procedure. The aircraft is certified to operation from the airfields located 2,500 m height above the sea level.

The AN-140 looks a bit similar to Bombardier's Dash 8 aircraft, especially with the location of the propellers that are fixed above the wing. Plus, it looks like a great regional aircraft, especially for STOL operations, because of its sleek design... that really makes serious competition versus similar regional propeller aircraft, especially Xi'an MA-60 and the ATR family.

With respect to Xian MA-60, An-140 is playing in higher league. Xian MA-60 is a Chinese version of An-24, which was designed in late 50's. While An-140 represents new generation and was designed in late 90's.

THE ANTONOV AN-124-100M-150

The restart of the production of a modernized variant of the Antonov AN-124 is being planned and is at an advanced stage. The new product is to be called the AN-124-100M-150 which will be realized through a joint collaboration between the Ukranian Antonov and the Russian United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). The most notable improvement over the regular An-124 is its ability to handle 150 tonnes of over-sized cargo (regular AN-124 handles 120 tons). Other improvements also include the following; New and upgraded Progress D-18T Series 4 engine with serated chevron nozzles (watch video below). This engine is quieter (stage IV), 10% more powerful thrust at take-off (up to 25,830kgf or 56,800lbf) and has improved emissions (cleaner burning). Other improvements include FADEC control, modern glass cockpit (EFIS avionics) and reduced crew of 4 (Pilot, copilot + 2 loadmasters).

The beautiful video below shows the AN-124 with registration 'UR-82009' - a special bird! A very rare and unique AN-124-100M-150, currently the only one in the world! Only very few and lucky people have seen it in action. This particular Airframe is the one and only existing Antonov AN-124-100M-150. This Airframe serves as a prototype for the proposed re-introduction of AN-124 in the '100M-150' variant.

Please note the new engine's chevron nozzles (similar to the Rolls-Royce Trent in Boeing 787). For those who are not familiar with turbofan engines, the nozzles are the aft section (rear section) of the turbofan engines where the hot gases and emission are blown out. Chevron nozzles are those jagged edges that make them look like cookie cutters! Compare those engines to the other images of AN-124s.

Please disregard Wikipedia's entry on the AN-124-100M-150 - they do not know what the heck they are saying. Just a bunch of confused people yakking away about something they know nothing about

Those are good news, it'll be great to see more Antonov monsters in the sky rather than what we normally see.

Will they ever build a new AN-225?

The AN-225 was recently named as a flying midair launchpad for the new Russian Space Launch project. That's probably the biggest, if not the only chance to see the another newly built AN-225.

IIRC, the tooling needed for An-225's wing and empennage (they differ significantly from An-124) was destroyed after the fall of the Soviet Union, so it needs to be built from scratch, which is uneconomical given the niche market for such enormous transports. Which is why those air launch projects that I know of are planning to use the An-124 as a carrier: it is at least theoretically could be produced anew, and its capacity is usually enough.
