Why would that matter so much? Nakuru should have started early. Kisumu is quite an old city for Kenyan history that is.

the fight for kenyan independence began in Nakuru. More CV taxes are collected in Nakuru yet it doesn't have an airport. I wish Kakamega was given city status instead of Kisumu.

You know how a town becomes a city is number of people living in it right? The easiest way is to create conditions that can grow population of the town. And I think there’s no limit to how many cities we can have. I find these statements about Kisumu and city status thoughtless. The law tells us how a town becomes a city.

Bill seeks to cut population size for city status

Quote:
Kenya will cut population size required for a town to be declared a city from half a million to 250,000 residents if proposed changes to urban law that seek to create more cities is adopted.

The proposal contained in the Urban Areas and Cities (Amendment) Bill, 2017, follows Cabinet approval in September to provide for five cities, up from the current three.

Though the Cabinet did not specify the two towns set for elevation to cities, Kenya’s largest urban centres behind Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu cities are Nakuru and Eldoret in that order.

Besides the city status criteria, the bill also seeks to cut the required population size for a municipality to 50,000 from 250,000 residents.

The proposed law provides for creation of 64 municipalities, 66 townships and 80 market centres.

Market centres are required to have a population of at least 2,000 people.

Currently, only two urban centres are classified as municipalities while 130 have township status.

That should make both of you guys happy.. or not!

I have seen this phrase thrown around on this forum and one is left wondering is it really bad politics of Kisumu or bad politics of Mt. Kenya? Let us try to be objective in our sentiments.

Mt Kenya is not burning and Mt Kenya people are certainly not on the streets burning Kisumu. Point a finger at everyone while 4 pointing back at you. Did you see dominion close shop? Was that mt Kenya politics too. Take time read the Dominion story! Then tell me how many investors will have guts investing in Luo-Nyanza. Lets even go with your argument that its the Mt Kenya politics that's bad. Do Nyanza people have to burn their own place just to prove their point? I don't see Makueni , kitui or kakamega burning. We have to tame our politics!

Kisumu looks for like a city than Nakuru and Kakamega. Many asians who settled here in urban kisumu made it a vibrant commercial centre long ago. The skirmishes you see may put blemish on it but you cannot take away that Kisumu is the centre of economic activities in Western Kenya. However Nakuru has been growing very fast and the economy of Nakuru is way larger than Kisumu because of agriculture and horticulture which beats the GDP contribution of the service section in Kisumu.
