A housing block in Benwell had to be evacuated after part of its roof collapsed.

People inside the building off Buddle Road were quickly escorted out at about 3pm on Tuesday.

They faced a wait of more than three hours before they were allowed back into their homes.

The extent of the collapse was not visible from the outside.

Northumbria Police confirmed it was linked to building work taking place at the property.

These luxury apartments are being built on an old Newcastle farm - but they are far from a pigsty
By Ian Robson 6 June 2017

The Woodacre Apartments in the west end of Newcastle has nine new homes (Photo: Free editorial use)

Fancy living in the lap of luxury? You can at this Newcastle development.

Urban Base is selling new-build homes in the west of the city, offering affordable prices and high specifications. The Woodacre Apartments are built on land which was formerly a farm. But judging by these early photos, their appearance is going to be far from a pigsty.

Woodacre Homes said: “Built on land that once belonged to Woodacre Farm, a bygone farm from Newcastle’s past, the apartments are skilfully and cleverly tailored to the sloping nature of the site. It creates a dramatic yet perfectly oriented location with an extensive outdoor environment that is both pleasurable and secure. All apartments enjoy views over the beautiful communal gardens and managed woodland at the rear of the development – with the majority having a balcony or terrace on which to relax and delight in the wider view over to Denton Dene, an important wildlife corridor running through the heart of west Newcastle.”

The development is a collection of nine luxury two-bedroom homes. Two apartments are already sold and the rest are going for prices between £110,000 and £125,000. On-site parking is behind an electric gate while there is recessed spot lighting to some rooms.

There are fully fenced landscaped gardens and a managed woodland. The kitchens and bathrooms are said to reflect the highest quality whilst the bedrooms are of a generous size. All rooms have underfloor heating that you can control with your smartphone.

Former Wingrove Tram Depot

Green light for latest Newcastle hotel
Matthew Ord 24 October 2016

Previously deferred plans to transform a former Reg Vardy Toyota site in Newcastle into a mixed-use development comprising a hotel, gym and restaurant have been approved.

The vacant tram shed on Westgate Road is set to be transformed into a 40-bed venue by Grainger Hotel. A restaurant, gym and both an above ground and underground car park are also proposed.

The application was recommended for approval at a Newcastle City Council meeting in May before a decision was deferred to allow for the submission of a structural report, a detailed construction method statement and proposed images of the development. Grainger Hotel submitted the required documents before Friday's (21 October 2016) meeting.

A report to the council concluded that the proposals "could achieve the architect's requirements without the loss of the existing building if the appointed contractor is experienced and competent in carry out works of this nature".

While Newcastle City Council was again recommended to approve the application, locals had voiced their concerns including a disturbance to surrounding residents due to hotel use, Insufficient parking exacerbating an existing parking problem in the area and the potential disturbance from the hotel bar. The report to planners, however, said the "important" building is "starting to detract from the appearance of the area".

The application came five years after a previous scheme for a 48-bed hotel and two retail units at the site was approved. However, this was never implemented and has now expired.

Let's Talk Newcastle Logo - Link to Overview of Newcastle schemes powered by Commonplace Arthur's Hill & Fenham

Have your say on proposals for walking and cycling in Arthur's Hill and Fenham

From workshops and previous engagement Newcastle City Council has developed a strategy for walking and cycling routes linking our schools, neighbourhoods and local amenities.

Based on the experiences, insights and ideas collected in last year’s survey about what it’s like getting around in Arthurs Hill & Fenham, your local Streets for People Reference Group have worked with an Urban Designer to come up with a set of proposals to address the issues that were raised last year. We are calling this our Neighbourhood Plan.

The Arthurs Hill & Fenham neighbourhood plan includes six broad proposals. These are:

* Creating a new east-west cycle route, between Two Ball Lonnen and Wellington Street (via Lonnen Avenue, Cedar Road and Studley Terrace)

*Improving north-south cycle and walking links between Cowgate and the West Road (via Kingsway and Gowland Avenue)

* Improving north-south cycle and walking links around Nuns Moor and Arthurs Hill (e.g. on Fenham Hall Drive, Dilston Road and Gainsborough Grove)

* Improving Stanhope Street for cycling and walking

* Improving road safety around local schools

* Small neighbourhood improvements (e.g. improving the green space on Hadrian Road/Hoyle Avenue, and removing some traffic from some back lanes)

Former Newcastle police station up for sale with £500,000 price tag

An arresting proposition faces developers who are being sought to snap up a former Northumbria Police station, which has been put up for sale with a £500,000 price tag.

Newcastle property agents Sanderson Weatherall say the old Westgate Road police station, in the city’s west end, is ripe for redevelopment, with developers potentially getting the opportunity to turn it into anything from homes to a hotel, subject to getting planning approval. The site, being marketed on behalf of the the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, Vera Baird, has more than 20,000qft of space.

And as the building isn’t listed there is scope for new owners to flatten the building and build something completely new on the 0.59acre site.

Offers in the region of £500,000, subject to contract, are being invited, but the agency says the client isn’t obliged to accept the highest offer, or another other offer received. The property comprises of a four-storey framed building, with brick and cladding and flat roofs.

When it was a used by Northumbria Police , the upper floors were used as office accommodation, while the ground floor was used as an operational police station and divided into numerous rooms, holding cells and cellular accommodation. The building was closed when Northumbria Police opened its new central city base on Forth Banks, Newcastle.

Potential buyers have to send in their offers for the plot, including their scheme proposals, by October 20.
