^^ Well, Montreal built an airport that is too far away from the city. And it wouldn't have become a cargo-only airport if a rail line had been built.

Also, the 1976 Summer Olympics had a negative impact on Montreal. The cycling stadium was converted into an indoor zoo. Also, the Paralympics were held in Toronto instead of Montreal.

It still sucks though. I don't care how popular it is. are there any other Olympic Parks that have zoos on their space? I don't like the entire Olympic Park complex.

Who the hell cares if you don't like it? The velodromes in Munich, Los Angeles, Seoul, Atlanta and probably most earlier Olympic cities are also gone. Cycling is not a major sport in Canada so it would be absolutely ridiculous to maintain a facility which would be empty 350 days of the year. And it's not a zoo, idiot!! It's a recreation of 4 ecosystems which happens to include some animals. It is one of the most unique facilities in the world and it draws 10's of thousands of visitors each year, 10's of thousands more than an empty velodrome would. Why don't you go and berate the people of Athens for not maintaining their Olympic baseball facillities. I'm sure that they'll think that you're an idiot just as we do.

Wen the Habs left the Forum, Ste-Catherine Street west took a big hit. Alot of stores closed down. It pretty much killed the McDonalds that was across the Street(it was the busiest McDonalds in North America at the time)

Today things are picking up in that area. There aren't as many boarded up storefronts on Ste-Catherine West. The Forum has been redevelopped into an Entertainment complex (blasphemy!!!) but at least it's being used for something!

Le terrain longeant la rue Saint-Hubert, entre le boulevard Rosemont et la rue des Carrières, sur le site des anciens ateliers municipaux Rosemont, sera vendu à Conceptions Rachel-Julien. C'est la proposition de ce promoteur immobilier, conçue en collaboration avec le Groupe Cardinal Hardy, qui a été retenue. Trois immeubles, comprenant 335 appartements en copropriété, seront construits sur le site au cours des prochaines années.

«Ce projet va aider à restructurer tout le secteur à côté de la station de métro Rosemont, souligne avec satisfaction André Lavallée, maire de l'arrondissement de Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie. Il s'ajoute aux deux projets en préparation de la coopérative d'habitation Le Coteau Vert et de l'organisme à but non lucratif Un toit pour tous, qui seront construits à l'intérieur du même quadrilatère.»

Sept promoteurs ont répondu à l'appel de propositions, lancé en octobre dernier par la Ville de Montréal. Propriétaire du terrain, la municipalité ne se contentait pas de le vendre au plus offrant. Elle a aussi établi certains critères pour inciter les constructeurs à soumettre des projets de qualité. Des points ont ainsi été accordés au concept d'aménagement et à l'architecture des sept projets, de même qu'à l'attention portée au développement durable et à l'accessibilité universelle. Les projets devaient être certifiés Novoclimat. Une certaine proportion des logements devaient par ailleurs s'adresser aux familles et être vendus à prix abordables.

Le projet de Conceptions Rachel-Julien, qui n'a pas encore de nom officiel, comptera ainsi 39 logements de trois chambres et 76 logements de deux chambres. Plus de 50 d'entre eux coûteront moins de 235 000$ (taxes incluses), afin que de futurs copropriétaires puissent profiter du programme municipal d'accession à la propriété.

«Nous sommes très fiers», indique Denis Robitaille, président de Conceptions Rachel-Julien, spécialisé dans la conversion d'immeubles patrimoniaux et la construction de logements en milieu urbain. Parmi ses réalisations figurent entre autres Les Condos de la gare, Le NOVO et la Place Delacroix.

Ce qui l'a poussé à participer? La situation géographique du terrain. Le complexe sera en effet à proximité d'une station de métro, d'une piste cyclable, de la Plaza Saint-Hubert et d'un parc. Il sera aussi à côté d'un centre civique et d'une bibliothèque, qui seront aménagés dans le bâtiment sis au 700, boulevard Rosemont.

«Il y a une façon urbaine de vivre qui se développe de plus en plus, constate M. Robitaille, qui vit à Montréal et va travailler l'été en vélo. Le projet s'inscrit dans cette logique. Un des bâtiments abritera par exemple une garderie, pour faciliter la vie des familles qui veulent vivre en ville. Il y aura quelques commerces au rez-de-chaussée d'un des immeubles, comme une fruiterie et une boulangerie, pour simplifier la vie des copropriétaires, qui n'auront pas à prendre leur voiture tout le temps. Il y aura de l'espace pour les vélos dans le stationnement intérieur, mais aussi au niveau de la rue. Six places de stationnement seront aussi réservées au service de partage de voitures, Communauto.»

Le complexe sera formé de trois bâtiments en forme de L ou de U, qui s'imbriqueront les uns dans les autres. Le premier à être construit comptera huit étages et s'élèvera un peu en retrait, le long du boulevard Rosemont, à l'intersection de la rue Saint-Hubert. Un petit parc sera en effet aménagé juste en avant, sur le boulevard Rosemont. Trois ou quatre commerces occuperont le rez-de-chaussée. L'immeuble comptera 98 appartements en copropriété.

«Le terrain est long et étroit, explique l'architecte Roch Cayouette, responsable du projet au sein du Groupe Cardinal Hardy. Les immeubles seront décalés, ne formant pas une ligne droite, pour briser la monotonie et créer des jardins de part et d'autre des bâtiments.»

La plupart des grands logements destinés aux familles seront construits dans les deux phases ultérieures. Chacun des appartements au rez-de-chaussée aura son entrée privée, au niveau de la rue. Il y aura aussi quelques logements répartis sur deux étages.

Au nombre des initiatives vertes, notons qu'une partie des eaux de pluie sera récupérée et réutilisée pour alimenter les toilettes et irriguer les jardins. Des espaces seront aussi prévus dans les cuisines pour conserver les sacs de recyclage.

Le promoteur espère mettre en vente les unités de la première phase dès mai ou juin. Il souhaite commencer la construction à l'automne.
This is the type of development that I love and get excited about: development for the real world in the 21st century. These condos are being built in Rosemont, and they are affordable, high quality, and built to Novostar (EnergyStar) standards. They will include commercial space such as daycare, grocery, bakery etc. on the ground floor, parking facillities for bikes inside and out, and 6 reserved spaces for Communauto (our local carshare service). The toilets and gardens will be fed by a system which collects rainwater, and room for recycling and compost will be incorporated into the kitchens. These buildings respect the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood and are located next to a métro station and bike paths as well as parks, a library and community centre.

While skyline enhancing, 100 storey, 'signature' design condos have their place in every city, the vast majority of us are either unable to or are unwilling to pay 1 million dollars plus for a cubicle in the sky which more often then not affords a view not of the city beyond but merely of the 'design statement' next door. Cities are lived in mostly at ground level and it's high time that we concerned ourselves with ground level instead of how our skyline 'stacks up' compared to other skylines.

Maybe the location for the new project close to Metro Rosemont is alright because it's far away from Downtown ,but I have seen many projects proposed around downtown area, they are all cloned low rise condos , when you look at them ,you feel so bored before they even get constructed

Railpower to build 125-job plant near Montreal, with $20M from Ontario Teachers


MONTREAL — Railpower Technologies Corp. (TSX:p) has announced plans for a locomotive assembly plant in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, east of Montreal.

The maker of hybrid locomotives, headquartered in suburban Brossard, said Monday the factory will create 125 jobs.

Railpower said the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, which invested $35 million in the company earlier this year, is putting forward another $20 million, in the form of a convertible debenture, to finance the factory construction and build additional demonstration locomotives.

"For the first time in its history, Railpower will own a dedicated, world-class manufacturing facility capable of building the world's leading high-efficiency locomotives," stated CEO Jose Mathieu.

"This facility is expected to significantly improve our manufacturing efficiencies and provide Railpower with the ability to rapidly expand its current production."

The plant at St-Jean-sur-Richelieu will initially have 55,000 square feet of production space and 4,000 square feet of offices, with plans for future expansion.
Investment Quebec has granted Railpower a subsidy of up to $2.5 million.
