PHILADELPHIA | The Alexander | 113m | 370ft | 32 fl | Com

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A large development by the Mormon Church in Center City Philadelphia will yield buildings designed by Robert A.M. Stern including this 32 story residential tower:

Phase 2 Of Mormon Church Development Announced

Quote:
◾The Mormon Church will further connect Center City with North Philadelphia with the infill of a vacant lot at 16th & Vine Streets, says The Inquirer, with the constructions of a 32-story mixed-use tower (258 apartments, 13 townhouses, and retail shops). A meetinghouse, between that tower and the temple now under construction, will include a chapel, courtyard, multipurpose space, and a genealogy center. Robert A.M. Stern’s firm is responsible for the design of the additional buildings; the meetinghouse, like his design for the Museum of the American Revolution, looks to the past for its architectural cues, while the residential tower, says Mormon scholar Armand Mauss, exemplifies the modern church’s attempt for a greater inner-city presence. If granted the necessary variances, the church expects a 2016 completion date.

The Mormon Temple is already under construction:

Mormon Apartment Tower, Meetinghouse Head to Civic Review

Quote:
You want to know the most amazing part about proposed projects going up for Civic Design Review? We get to peek at all the fun details and share them with you. Such is the case with the proposed Mormon Meetinghouse and its adjacent 32-story apartment building for 1601 Vine Street. Not only do we get some new renderings straight from (love-him-or-blah-him) Robert A.M. Stern, we also check in to see "what's under the hood," so to speak.

The Mormon meetinghouse will be 24,000 square feet and 117 feet high to the steeple. It will house a chapel, a cultural center with what looks to be a gymnasium, classrooms, and also feature the "Sunday Garden" located on that funky corner of Franklin Town Boulevard and Wood Street.

As for the 359 foot high apartment tower, you probably already know about the 264 apartments and 13 rental townhomes side of things. However, there are a few other important tidbits in the proposal. The complex will feature six green roofs, three on the Wood Street side and three on the Vine Street side, encompassing 7,500 square feet of space and also house a large, south-facing observation deck and a separate "amenities terrace," where we imagine the swimming pool might be located. Amenities also include a fitness and business center. A two-level, below grade parking deck with room for 238 parking spaces is also in the plans.

It looks like ground has broken, they're starting to dig up the parking lot blacktop.

Amazing work! Too bad about the ass-shaped freeway ramps on the adjacent block.

Say what you will about your political beliefs about Mormons or whatever, but the respect they have for urban design, architecture, and living well is enviable. They put so much effort and money into designing their churches, and most of them look fantastic. Kudos, guys

this tower is known as The Alexander, and is more or less complete.
