Glavna I osnovna namjena mu je da bude plovan, sekundarna namjena za navodnjavanje. Cilj je skratiti put iz Siska, Sl. Broda prema sjeveru.

Sava je teoretski plovna do Siska ali nakon raspada juge slabo I nikako se odrzava korito.
Sava nije sad niti je bila kao plovni put u rangu Dunava (manji gaz, manji brodovi, veci broj dana kada nije mogua plovidba...). Zato se vode rasprave uopce isplativosti gore navedenog kanala.

Cisto sumnjam da se to moze. Jedan primjer iz HR: prije desetak godina (ne znam kako je sad) jedna firma bi narucila kontejner robe iz Kine u Zagreb. Kontejner bi brodom dosao u Hamburg, pa vlakom u Ljubljanu, pa kamionom do Zagreba.
Nije se isplatilo najlogicnijim putem da ide roba (preko Rijeke) zbog malih kolicina robe. Danas se puno vise vozi kontejnera iz/u Rijeku pa se mozda praksa promjenila.
Poanta je da treba vremena I prometa ( I subvencija I pomoci drzave) da se neki teretni put ustali pa da profunkcionira kako treba.
