Bengaluru is India’s best city for students, London tops global list: QS ranking 2018

Bengaluru has been rated as the best city in India for students by the QS Student City ranking 2018, in which London topped the global list. The ranking framework assessed universities on the basis of performance of universities, employers hiring, affordability of city, desirability, quality of life, and the diversity of student body.

Only two Indian cities made in the list of top 100 cities for students in the global rankings. India’s top city was Bengaluru at 81st spot, followed by Mumbai at 85th. In the national capital where thousands of students came to take admission could not make in the top 100 list. Delhi was placed in 113th, and Chennai at 115th rank in the global ranking 2018.

Bengaluru which is known as IT capital of India is also home to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Globally, Tokyo secured the second place in the global ranking followed by Seoul (10th), and Hongkong (14th).

London became the best city for students for the second consecutive year. London mayor Sadiq Khan told PTI, “The fact that London has again been ranked the best city in the world in which to be a student is fantastic news – and is no surprise given that London is home to world-leading higher education institutions and a vibrant cultural life.” He added, “This is further evidenced that London is open to students and talent from around the world.”

Immunology, vaccine research centre to be set up in Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy CM

Keeping in mind the importance of immunology in the future, Karnataka is very keen to establish an Immunology and Vaccine Research Centre in Bengaluru in collaboration with the Emory Vaccine Centre of Atlanta University, said the Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan.

He was speaking in a webinar meeting held on Monday with the director of Emory vaccine centre Dr, Rafi Ahammad.

"Immunology is going to be the prospective area in the near future. Vaccines, infectious diseases, cancer research, etc all these boil down ultimately to immunology.

The results of researches done now in the field of immunology will be the solutions to the problems of the coming days. Hence, investments done in this area are going to fetch fruitful results," Narayan explained.

The entire world is pondering about immunology and effective vaccine at this juncture. The decision to set up an immunology and vaccine research center is very conducive in view of the present situation, he opined.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the state government is also very keen on novel ways of COVID 19 diagnostic tests.

Stating that the state needs to be focused on research in the development of vaccines, clinical trials, and translation of research studies to the benefit of the larger society, he said: "There are at least not less than 20 institutions of national eminence which are being engaged in vaccine development activities.

All these will be integrated and the government is ready to support through policy implementation. The rigid restrictions which were in place earlier with regard to clinical trials are now being relaxed."

Dr Rafi Ahammad, the director of the Emory vaccine center of Atlanta, said that the Emory vaccine centre has developed a highly specified and sensitive rapid test for COVID-19.

This method has been adopted by hospitals in Atlanta, effectively and successfully. Plasma therapy, human molecular antibodies development are the other areas in which Emory center has been engaged, he further said.

He also said the center would come out with a specific proposal of collaboration to submit for the government of Karnataka.

A couple of vaccines for COVID 19 may get the provisional license in about 6-8 months said Dr.Rafi Ahammad, the director of the Emory vaccine center of Atlanta.

"At present, clinical trials with respect to three vaccines of COVID-19 are at the forefront. Among these two trails are in the third stage.

The vaccines need to be trialed on 30,000 patients. The evaluation process is being carried out. If the efficacy of these vaccines is found to be more than 50% they may get a provisional license," he said.

Nature Index Ranks Bengaluru-Based JNCASR In Top 50 Rising Institutions For Materials Science Globally
Bengaluru-based research institute Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) has found a place among the top 50 rising institutions in the world for materials science. Slotting in at 23, it is the only Indian institute to feature on the list.

The top 50 table has appeared in the Nature supplement “Nature Index 2021 Materials Science”, published on 30 June 2021.
The supplement also hosts a second table, where JNCASR has come in at 171 in the leading 200 institutions in materials science.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), also from Bengaluru, ranks slightly higher on this top 200 list, as it is placed 165th.
But among the 50 rising institutions, JNCASR is the only Indian entry.
According to the journal Nature, the basis for ranking the highest performing institutes in the world in the field of materials science is the “change in article share” from 2019 to 2020.
Nature watches contributions to research articles published in 82 high-quality natural science journals, chosen by an independent group of researchers. The data, compiled by the Nature Research team, provides a score in two categories — count and share.
A country or an institution gets a count of 1 for a research article when at least one author from that country or institution has contributed to it.
The share is essentially the share of authorship on an article. When multiple authors and/or institutes contribute to a research article, they each accumulate a fractional share, indicating their individual contributions to the work, with the total share for an article amounting to 1.

The top 50 rising institutions in materials science has been compiled by tracking the change in this second category — 'share' — for institutions from 2019 to 2020.

In 2019, JNCASR had a share value of 8.89, which shot up to 19.52 in 2020. This amounted to a change of 10.67 or 120.6 per cent. Only three institutes recorded a higher percentage share change between the two years.
Overall, the top three institutes by rank in materials science are from China and South Korea. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU, China), Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, China), and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, South Korea) take the top three places.

China and the United States of America (US) dominate the table with 19 and 12 institutions from the two countries respectively featuring on the list.

In the last release of the top 50 rising institutions for materials science by Nature Index, published in 2019, comparing 2015 and 2018 output, no Indian institution made a mark on the table. This time, JNCASR makes an entry.
“Very happy to be among High Performing Institutes in Materials Science!!,” Dr Subi Jacob George, Professor and Chair, New Chemistry Unit, JNCASR, tweeted yesterday (13 July).

JNCASR was set up by the Department of Science and Technology in 1989 to commemorate the birth centenary year of the first Indian prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Ever since, the institute has made great strides in education and research, producing 179 PhD graduates and 300 patents.

Eight research units operate across focus areas of science at the institute, including the chemistry and physics of materials, evolutionary and integrative biology, neuroscience, and theoretical sciences.

Fifty-six faculty members serve JNCASR — a relatively small figure given that, for instance, IISc has over 10 times the number of faculty members. The research work carried out by the institute’s workforce has yielded nearly 5,000 publications over the years.

In the past year, from 1 May 2020 to 1 April 2021, chemistry has taken the largest share of the institute’s research output followed by the physical sciences and life sciences.

Earlier this year, JNCASR ranked eighth among Indian institutions for research output during the same 2020-21 period. The data was compiled by Nature Research.

The Nature Index provides a clean look at high-quality research output along with insights on scientific collaboration at various levels.

Sakra World Hospital to invest Rs 1,000 cr to set up second unit in Bengaluru

Sakra World Hospital lines up ₹2,000 crore for Bengaluru expansion..
The expansion involves addition of 1,000 hospital beds across two multispecialty hospitals and a small boutique hospital, a top official said.
Sakra World Hospital, a multispecialty hospital in Bengaluru backed by Japanese promoters Secom and Toyota Tsusho, is planning to open three new hospitals in Bengaluru with an investment of up to ₹2,000 crore over the next five years.
The expansion involves addition of 1,000 hospital beds across two multispecialty hospitals and a small boutique hospital, a top official said.
"We are running our existing hospital at full capacity, so we decided to expand," Yuichi Nagano, managing director of Sakra World Hospital, told ET in an interview.
Sakra currently operates a 307-bed multispecialty hospital at Marathahalli.
It will begin construction of its second greenfield multispecialty hospital with 500 beds at Banaswadi, Bengaluru North, at an estimated cost of ₹1,000 crore. This facility, with a built-up area of 600,000 square feet, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and begin operations in early 2027.
The proposed hospital will have facilities to treat cancer patients, Nagano said. The boutique hospital with 50 beds is coming up at HSR Layout, Bengaluru, and is expected to begin operations this year.
Within five years, the company is also looking to set up its third major hospital of 300-400 beds in Bengaluru, for which it still has to finalise the location.
"We have two investors... Both are cash rich companies and will be funding the expansion," Nagano said.
Sakra is operated by Takshasila Hospitals Operating Pvt Ltd, a joint venture (JV) between Secom Medical System, a group company of Secom, and Toyota Tsusho, trading arm of Toyota Group.
Secom owns 60% in the JV, while Toyota Tsusho owns the remaining.
The company opened its first hospital in 2014 as the first Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Indian hospital sector.
The existing hospital clocked ₹500 crore revenue in 2023.
Nagano said Sakra would focus on the Bengaluru market as there are still areas not covered by medical services.
While India is a growing market led by a rise in middle class residents due to economic growth, it has insufficient world class medical infrastructure, he said. On the contrary, Japan is a shrinking market, he added.Nagano said Sakra has introduced the Japanese business philosophy Kaizen that seeks to continuously improve patient safety and operational excellence at its hospital. It is also bringing Japanese hospitality, design and aesthetics to its hospitals to improve overall patient satisfaction, he said.
