Colombo | Mövenpick Hotel Colombo | 24 fl | Completed

Leisure Optimism
19 Jan, 2011 08:06:55
Sri Lanka second hotel scouted by Swiss leisure group
Jan 18, 2010 (LBO) - Swiss-based Mővenpick Hotels and Resorts, which is to manage a city hotel in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo is looking for opportunity to run a resort elsewhere in the island, an official said.
Movenpick has struck a management deal with Sri Lanka's Softlogic group which is planning to build a 24-floor tower hotel in Colombo which will have 224 rooms.

"Any resort hotel would complement the city hotel here in Sri Lanka," Andreas Muller, chief operating officer for the Middle East and Asia of Movenpick said.

"We are known for resort hotels. We run big resort hotels of between 500 to 600 guest rooms. "We are looking at opportunities, when an opportunity presents itself."

Movenpick runs city hotels as well as resorts.

The group has a 12-year deal with options to extend another 10 years with Softlogic. Softlogic has interests in electronics and healthcare.

Muller says Movenpick's Colombo hotel will command prices of about 200 dollars a night when it is completed in two years time.

Muller said he is optimistic about prospects for Sri Lanka following the end of the war in 2009 and a more stable political environment.

He said the firm operated hotels in Yemen and Beirut and was used to managing risk. The Beirut hotel had around 95 to 100 percent occupancy, he said.

Muller expected strong growth in Sri Lanka with India and China also growing fast. Movenpick is expanding into Asia and is working with a number of local investors to build and open new hotels in Thailand and China.

The group has hotels in most of the Middle East and was evaluating two opportunities in Iraq. It had two hotels in Vietnam, one in Thailand, but would open three more soon.

The group will also soon open in Singapore, Malaysia and was evaluating more opportunities in China.

Great!

SL needs branded hotels like Mövenpick and Shangri-La.

I wish Starwood Group too enter the market with at least their Four Points and Sheraton brands. Luxury Collection may be a bit of a stretch at the moment though.

The Starwood Group was in the midst of doing a project in the parking lot opposite the Lakehouse once but had a lot of stumbling blocks. It was an investment from a Maldives leading hotelier.

The present government should invite and revive them. I am sure the Tourism Authority and the BOI will attract more International Brands.

I see piling work has just about commenced. Does any one have any renders? Who are the project consultants?

MTD Walkers announces projects for 2012
New construction and piling plans get under way:

MTD Walkers, Sri Lanka’s only listed, fully-fledged engineering and infrastructure development company, continues to affirm its role in the nation’s infrastructure development drive through its subsidiary CML MTD Construction Ltd contracting to construct the A32, which is an important conduit between the North and the South. Meanwhile, their other subsidiary, Walkers Piling has won the piling contract for the new five-star international hotel Softlogic Movenpick.

According to MTD Walkers PLC, Chief Financial Officer Viraj de Silva, these projects are two of the largest contracts to be undertaken by any engineering company in 2011. ‘We have successfully won these contracts and both these projects are slated for completion within the next two years,’ de Silva said.

As one of the best rated general contractors in the country specializing in road construction, railway and road bridges, the company will undertake the construction of 36 kilometers of A32 roadway which is expected to be completed by 2013. After completion, the A32 road will connect the North with the South and will be the shortest route from Colombo to Jaffna. De Silva added that the cost of the road construction is Rs. 1.7 billion. CML-MTD Construction has also received a letter of acceptance for the reconstruction of the Giriulla-Narammala Highway at a value of Rs 1.4 billion.

The company has received the highest CI grading in three construction sectors, namely highways, bridges and land reclamation. The company also has received ISO-9001:2008 Quality Standard certification from BVQI for its management systems in connection with earth moving and land grading, roads, road bridges, railway bridges, industrial parks, irrigation systems, storm water drainage, port construction and building of revetments, sheet piling, concrete pile driving, pre-cast concrete products, industrial mining, quarrying and crushing. In continuation of its policy of being extremely sensitive to environmental impacts caused by construction activities and considering the steps taken to minimize such impacts the company recently obtained ISO 14001-2004 certification for Environmental Management Systems from SGS.

The company has already successfully completed the construction of substantial components of the new Southern Expressway and is in the process of contributing specialist construction capacity for constructing the Colombo-Katunayaka Expressway.

Meanwhile, Walkers’ Piling (Pvt) Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of MTD Walkers and one of the largest piling contractors in Sri Lanka has secured the contract to carry out piling work on the world renowned Movenpick Hotel, commissioned by Softlogic. Walkers Piling will commence work this month using the specialized ‘secant’ piling technique which is frequently used overseas for deep excavation. The Softlogic Movenpick Hotel is one of several international hotels slated to commence operations in Sri Lanka following the post-war nation development drive.

MTD Walkers Piling, Chief Operating Officer, Lal Perera said, ‘Winning this contract is an endorsement of our strength and confidence as one of the most reliable companies to handle such large projects. We have previously carried out numerous large projects successfully and are now in the forefront of this industry.’

For the past 30 years, Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd., the pioneer pile foundation company in Sri Lanka, has been specializing in pile foundations.

The company was incorporated in 1981 along with Voltas International Limited of India as a joint venture with approvals from the Foreign Investment Advisory Committee of Sri Lanka. In 2008, the company was acquired by MTD Walkers PLC, the only fully-fledged multi disciplinary engineering company in Sri Lanka.

Construction of Mövenpick Hotel in Sri Lanka to begin next month
Dec 17, Colombo: The Swiss hospitality chain Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts will begin its first ever hotel in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo in January next year.

Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts President and CEO Jean Gabriel Peres has recently visited the country to sign the management agreement with Softlogic Holdings to build the 200-room five-star property in Kollupitiya area of Colombo.

Excavation work for the hotel is slated for January and the construction will be completed within 24 months.

"With the growing business traveller in mind as well as holiday guests, Mövenpick Colombo will be cozy, warm, exquisite, premium quality, and an upscale five-star hotel," Peres has told the Daily FT in an exclusive interview.

The executive has said that Sri Lanka tourism has the potential to be successful as Thailand is today as hospitality is natural for Sri Lankans.

"Sri Lanka's natural hospitality and warmth is legendary. Sri Lanka is a gorgeous country. Following the end of the conflict Sri Lanka has great potential for the future," Peres has said.

The hotelier has noted the cleanliness of the capital city and has said that the country has vastly improved.

Peres has said that he was impressed with the quality of new hotels and the entry of several new brands in Colombo and encouraged by the support infrastructure as well as real estate.

The global brand is also looking for opportunities to manage a beach resort to complement and expand its offering in Sri Lanka.

This construction will complete at right time, no doubt about it. It is mentioned that construction will begin in January 2013., for almost 4 months they've prepared the ground to begin the construction at the given date (January 2013). it will commence in full swing by January...

I meant the completed project.
Maybe it'll be a skyscraper....or maybe it'll be a large complex. They haven't released details about that, see?

The buildings behind it look a little run down.

And I'm pretty sure its going to be pretty tall, given that that's an awfully small ground area they are working with.
