Shangri-La Hambantota construction kicks off

Hong Kong based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts had its ground breaking ceremony on Saturday (25) for a resort on 145 acres on the Southern Coast of Hambantota.

The resort is due to open in 2014 and will complement Shangri-La’s Colombo resort which broke ground on Friday (24).

Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort and Spa will be surrounded by an 18-hole golf course, coconut plantations and sand dunes to the south. Built along the shoreline, the resort will offer 315 rooms including 24 suites ranging in size from 538 square feet to 2,691 square feet.

Appointment letters presented to Shangri-La trainees June 30, 2012, 6:50 pm

External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris and Namal Rajapaksa, MP and Chairman of the Hambantota District Development Committee, participated in an employment generation program in Hambantota recently.

Eighty youth received letters of appointment as trainees of Shangri-La Hotels, to embark on a challenging career. They are to receive four months’ residential training in Sri Lanka, followed by 18 months of training overseas in Shangri-La Hotels. During the training, which will equip them for a lucrative career in tourism, they will receive a substantial allowance together with other benefits.

This is the first of several batches to be recruited by Shangri-La Hotels, which have already commenced construction of two hotels in Sri Lanka – in Colombo and Hambantota.

Minister Peiris, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, Southern Provincial Council Member Siripala Jayaweera and Sajaj Mowjood, representing the management of Shangri-La Hotels, presented the appointment letters.

The foundation seems odd. Its not meant for the main structure. Could be for the workers or training. The main structure requires piling.
