I never will understand why make Sri Lanka same mistakes as Spain and Turkey.
Why not not longer present the old low: "not building higher than a coconut tree" is practise?
You could build so nice 3 floor hotels and guest houses. Nobody need this concrete block on a lovely bay.

Land prices, for one thing. Cost of operation for another.

The lower the building, the longer the property needs to be to accommodate the number of rooms needed. Which means a longer patch of land needs to be bought. Which in turn means more people living along the beach need to be paid to move. It's cheaper to buy a square of land with sea frontage than buying a long strip along the beach. Unless you're charging high prices, you can't justify that kind of investment. And Marriott isn't charging huge rates.

Second, there's a problem with operating the hotel. Citrus Waskaduwa is a sort of an example of this issue. The building is too long. It's too spread out. What they've tried to do is give every single room a sea view. By doing that, they've made the building ridiculously long, and it takes ages to walk from the common areas like the restaurant, to some rooms. You can't blame them entirely, since the land they've bought is a thin strip next to the railway line, and there's not much to see if you build rooms with no sea view. The point is, if you make the hotel lower, you make it longer. And if you make it longer, you start having problems like it being more difficult for staff- imagine trying to carry food to rooms it takes 10 minutes to walk to. Or the pain of trying to notice faults and maintain a long, spread out building well.

The other thing is that this blocky building does look pretty bad, but only because there's nothing else next to it of a similar size. It's just houses. But i do agree. It might look better if there was a bunch of busy resorts all along the coast with interesting architecture at least, but most of the newer beach hotels seem to be going for boring, blocky designs. Gone are the days when you had really interesting designs like Eden Hotel in Beruwala.

Of course you are right. But this are all problems of the hotel.
If the hotel don't like it than not do it.

I guess nobody like this pictures from a nice beach area

Yes, but a couple of buildings with a 500m gap would still be OK.
