Beautiful LJUBLJANA: Slovenia's Capital

Since we have a thread about Maribor, here's one about the capital, Ljubljana (pop. 264,000) -- a quickly growing tourist destination. If you have any pictures to share with us, please post them here (Bubach Hlubach?). And, again, thanks to SinCity for letting us know about destinacije.com.

The tallest buildings in Ljubljana, I believe, are in an 1980s residential complex in the northern part of the city. Despite that, the World Trade Center building is frequently cited as the tallest.

However, if this project gets built, it will become the tallest in the country:

An auditorium inside the building:

The project was designed by Dutch architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk. Most observers praise the architecture (I love it!), but there has also been widespread criticism of the proposal, because...

A.) An old structure from Austro-Hungarian times would have to be demolished.

B.) There are fears that the skyscraper would clash with Ljubljana's traditional skyline, which is dominated by the castle.

the project looks really interesting, but i don't think it'll "mix" well with the surroundings of the city.

how many projects do you think there are in total in ljubljana?

Brnik - Ljubljana Airport:

I think they are planning a new terminal/expansion.

Yes, they are planning a new terminal. A parking structure is currently under construction and a new terminal should follow that. In the 1980s, the airport actually wanted to build a brand-new terminal south of the runway, with the northern facility eventually becoming used just for general aviation. There was even talk of a second runway! However, that all changed with the breakup of Yugoslavia and the withdrawal of JAT from the airport.

Nevertheless, traffic at the airport is now growing at a steady pace. Last year was the airport's first one in history with more than a million passengers. With tourist traffic, in particular, on the rise (including flights by easyJet), the old terminal has become way too small. Instead of moving south of the runway, the new terminal will be built next to the old one on the northern side. I've heard that one will be used for departures and one for arrivals, but I've also heard that one will be used for Shengen and the other for non-Shengen flights.

Some more pics of the airport:

Thanks, long foot, and I agree about the airport! According to official statitics, it handled 1,048,238 passengers last year -- the most ever.

Urban Girl: Please do! BTW, the number of Turkish tourists visiting Slovenia is rapidly increasing (Of course, Turkey is already a very well-known destination in Slovenia).
