China's new bullet train models, "Fuxing", or rejuvenation, were officially launched on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway line and had its first ride on Monday.

CR400AF departed from Beijing South Railway Station at 11:05 am and headed to Shanghai. While the other, CR400BF, left Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for Beijing at the same time.

The new models traveled at a speed of about 350 kilometers per hour and the top speed could reach 400 km/h.

It took the first model about 5 hours and 45 minutes to reach Shanghai. On its way, it stopped by 10 stations, including Jinan, Shandong province and Tianjin.

According to Liang Zhaoyu, spokesperson of the China Railway Corp, the State-owned rail operator which led the design of the new models, all the tickets for CR400AF from Beijing to Shanghai were sold out on Monday.

From June 26 to June 30, there will be two pairs of high-speed trains running between Beijing and Shanghai using the new Chinese-standard bullet train, Liang said.

Starting from July1, the Chinese-standard type will be applied to four pairs of high-speed trains operated between the two stations, he added.

FRANCE FEB 2017..: Paris transport operator RATP has awarded CAF a €65m framework contract to design and manufacture 12 battery-overhead electric locomotives for shunting and hauling maintenance trains on the RER network, with an option for up to six more.

The 1 000 kW locomotives are to be delivered from CAF’s Bagnères de Bigorre plant in southern France from the first quarter of 2019. As well as being able to take power from the overhead electrification, they will have nickel-cadmium batteries to enable independent operation without the emissions and noise produced by a diesel engine.

Announcing the ‘breakthrough’ order on February 6, CAF said its first contract to supply this type of locomotive forms part of its strategy to expand into new market sectors.

ISRAEL: The first two of six GT26CW-2 diesel locomotives which are being built for Israel Railways by TZV Gredelj were unloaded at the port of Kishon near Haifa on August 5.

TZV Gredelj is subcontractor to US firm National Railway Equipment for the 50m shekel order, which was placed through CIC-Railway Equipment, the NRE agent in Israel and includes an option for up to six more.

Powered by a remanufactured EMD 645 engine rated at 3 300 hp, and running on reconditioned bogies, the 125 tonne locomotives are designed to haul freight trains of up to 2 300 tonnes. They are equipped with microprocessor traction control and GPS for train location and data transfer.

In May, the SEPTA(Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) Board of Directors approved spending up to $154 million for new electric locomotives to replace the existing AEM-7s/ALP-44 locomotives that have exceeded their useful life. The locomotives will be manufactured by Siemens Industry, Inc. and will be very similar to the ACS-64 electric locomotives Siemens is presently delivering to Amtrak. The first SEPTA ACS-64s are due to be delivered in early 2018. In conjunction with the planned purchase of new Multi-level passenger cars, SEPTA will be able to provide additional capacity to accommodate our growing ridership.

The Mercury

The New York Central made its splash into the streamliner craze not long after the Burlington's Zephyr and Union Pacific's M-10000. Dubbed the Mercury this eye-catching train was not exactly a brand new streamliner. Instead of spending millions for a company to either build it such a train or do as the Milwaukee Road and have its own forces construct one from the ground up, the NYC decided to go the conservative route and piece together a consist from dated heavyweight cars. While the train was not new, thanks to the help of a noted industrial design the train proved to be very successful with the public and was quite stunning once it rolled out into the public. Overall, the streamliner was such a hit that New York Central would go on to fleet several similar trains by various names. The original was eventually dubbed the Cleveland Mercury and remained in service until the 1950s.
