NEWS Thread

Thought this thread might be useful since the Greater Christchurch thread has disappeared.

We can keep all our non building, roading etc development here, and use this forum as general chit chat about whats going on around the old smoke

Fifth storey fire in Christchurch office building

11.30am Wednesday December 6, 2006

A fire in an office building caused disruption in central Christchurch this morning, closing part of Colombo St to all traffic, including pedestrians.

The fire was noticed just before 10am on the fifth floor of the building, on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester Sts, housing retail and office space.

Fire Service communications shift manager Rewi Grace said the entire building, about eight floors, had to be evacuated.

Nine fire appliances had gone to the scene, he said.

Colombo St, a main arterial route through central Christchurch, was blocked off to motorists and pedestrians, causing "a fair amount of disruption".

Four of the appliances were released after about half an hour, and fire safety officers were examining the scene to find the cause of the fire.

"We don't know the exact extent of the damage, but it's all been brought under control," Mr Grace said.

Everyone had been safely evacuated, and the fire had been contained to the fifth floor.

I merged the Greater Christchurch thread with the Projects thread as it was basically all about developments and projects anyway so makes sense to have it all in one thread like other big cities

That's cool this is just more for chit chat and interesting bits and bobs that are not really about buildings and inferstructure as such.

Plenty to say on our favourite spaces

Don’t fence the cricket oval, keep Riccarton Avenue as it is and hurry and build a children’s garden are the three most common responses to the Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens Management Plan.

More than 350 people have already had their say what they want to happen in two of Canterbury’s favourite spaces and most have had plenty to say on the 56 proposals.

There has been little support to turn Riccarton Avenue into a park-friendly road. Submissions say it is an important arterial route where people need to speed up rather than slow down to help traffic flow.

The proposal to put a fence around the Hagley Park cricket oval has also drawn strong criticism. “Part of the beauty of the Oval is its openness and a strong attraction is that people can come in and out of the venue,” says one submitter.

Reactions have been mixed to the idea of a new visitor centre with some people calling for it to remain the way it is. However, other submitters realise the importance of upgrading facilities for staff and educational purposes.

Responses to the proposal for a new Children’s garden have drawn the most favourable reactions, with one submitter saying “it is absolutely essential”.

Submissions on the Management Plan close at 5pm on 25 October. Information on having your say is available at the Civic Offices, libraries, service centres and the Botanic Gardens and on the Council’s website at www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay

Perhaps some of the AKL threads could be sorted and tidied up?

I think that would happen only after the SSC management instigated Enigma's earlier bored thread.

This forum is a mess .... PLEASE MODERATORS keep nagging !! Even if they just give us 5 sub-forums ... AUCKLAND, WELLINGTON, CHRISTCHURCH, TAURANGA & OTHER REGIONS

Each sub forum can have for eg.

SUB-FORUM ........... AUCKLAND:
*sticky* SUMMARY OF PROJECTS
*sticky* GALLERY
*sticky* SPORTS & RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE
*sticky* NEWS & EVENTS
*sticky* AIRPORT/S
*sticky* PORT (INCL. OF FERRY TRANSPORT)
*sticky* ROADS
*sticky* RAIL

and then the obvious - "Project- The Chancery, 34 levels, 150 metres" ... we can continue discussing other matters related to NZ on the main-page AND clean it up - get rid of all the dead threads.

I AM WILLING TO DO IT ALL BY MYSELF - JUST GIVE ME THE TOOLS

P.S. I have sent JAN a pm - cross fingers.

Sounds good, but for some reason management won't let us do it, apparently we aren't busy enough.
