I thought this one might be worthy of its own thread given the scale of the proposed development.

£200m leisure park plan in Speke to create 300 jobs

Jun 30 2010 by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

A NEW £200m leisure and entertainment park could be built in Speke, creating 300 jobs.

The development is being proposed for a 50-acre site currently home to a vehicle storage yard next to the New Mersey Retail Park on Speke Road.

Belfast-based developer Benmore Group wants to create a leisure destination featuring a multi-screen cinema, restaurants, a gym and hotels.

It is understood the company already has a number of tenants lined up to take space in the development.

It is hoped the scheme would complement the existing shops at the next door retail park.

It would lead to the creation of some 300 jobs and could be open by the middle of 2012.

It is expected that a further 500 people would be employed during the construction phase.

The £200m plan is envisaged to be the first of three stages of development, and a public consultation on the project starts tomorrow.

The development site is currently used by Jaguar for car storage, but was bought by Benmore a number of years ago.

Benmore anticipates that it will submit a planning application – the first phase in detail and subsequent phases in outline – during the summer with a possibility that it could be determined by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee before the end of the year.

The Vision

We want to turn this 50-acre brownfield site into a centre for family entertainment, serving Speke Garston, South Liverpool, and the whole of the Liverpool city region.

The development would include a multiplex cinema, family restaurants, a gym, family pub and hotels, along with parking spaces, complementing the existing shopping facilities at the New Mersey Shopping Park.

While the city of Liverpool boasts a number of such centres, the provision in South Liverpool is poor, leaving families with unnecessary journeys to catch the latest film or to enjoy a family occasion in a restaurant.

We want to bring together a range of attractions to provide something that Speke currently does not have. We hope to have a mix of familiar names and some new operators too.

Our aim is to provide an enjoyable and safe place for families, couples and friends to meet and enjoy themselves, creating a leisure and entertainment complex for all.

We are already in advanced talks with major household names about the site, including restaurant operators, a cinema chain, hotels and a gym operator.

Ford may leave Liverpool after Speke £30m New Mersey leisure scheme plans approved by council

An artist's impression of the New Mersey leisure scheme

CAR giant Ford may pull out of its Liverpool base after plans to build a £30m leisure park near its Speke headquarters were approved by Liverpool Council.

Belfast-based developer Benmore was given the go-ahead to construct a complex including shops, hotels and a cinema, which it said will create around 325 permanent jobs and see around £30m invested in Speke.

But the decision sparked protests from union chiefs, who said the loss of land Ford needs for its operation could jeopardise up to 200 skilled workers’ livelihoods.

I'm not sure where this leaves the original New Mersey Leisure Park proposals. That is a big site, and the NMLP proposals would not have used all the site, so it may have no bearing at all. On the other hand, it's all gone very quiet on the NMLP front, and this could be a re-working of the proposals for the site.
