HC Ambri-Piotta is a very popular hockey team from the small mountain community of Quinto (1.000 inhabitants) playing in the Swiss "National League A" with an average attendance of more than 5.000 per match.

Current Valascia stadium in Ambri (nzz.ch)

The canton of Ticino is divided between Lugano- and Ambri-supporters. Ambri has a lot of supporters as well all over Switzerland, especially in the neighbouring area of central Switzerland (Uri, Schwyz) on the other side of the Gotthard mountain range who visit the home games regularly. And similarly to the other mountain club, HC Davos, the team attracts often quite big supporter crowds at away games all over Switzerland.

The current stadium is partially visible hidden behind the trees on the right end of the picture, the new stadium would be located on the left end of the picture (rsi.ch)

The stadium "Valascia" (inaugurated in 1959) is the only stadium in NLA + NLB which is not completely closed and therefore also known as "icebox". The location is furthermore situated partially in an area with a certain avalanche risk.

Mario Botta works pro bono on the project (gdp.ch)

The club therefore needs to build a new stadium and has chosen a plot at the old airport around 500m distance from the current stadium. The club has received the land plot from the community of Quinto for free. The whole airport area had before been "sold" for a very low price of CHF 1 million by the Swiss confederation to the community. The plot where the stadium ought to be built as a very small part of the former airport area is estimated worth CHF 1.3 million alone.

In order to receive another exemption licence to play in NLA for the next season (the current stadium doesn't meet the minimum infrastructure criteria), HC Ambri-Piotta needs to prove that the new stadium project is under way, ideally with an application for plannung permission. The club has therefore invited well-known local architect Mario Botta to design the new stadium. But after protests by the cantonal architects association, the club will now follow the regular path via tender offers. The problem could be, that the League would need to break its own regulations in order to keep HCAP up in NLA.
