Hotel Indonesia "Datang Kembali"

SP/Alex Suban

[HDS/Y-4]

Giving new home for RI heritage

Tifa Asrianti, , The Jakarta Post, , Jakarta | Sun, 03/01/2009 11:22 AM | Lifestyle

From 1962 to 2004, every event that meant anything revolved around the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle because it was the site of the Hotel Indonesia itself.

Now surrounded by flashy, modern and lavish newer structures, the landmark building at Jl M.H. Thamrin 1, Central Jakarta has nevertheless stood the test of time, and holds some pleasant surprises within.

Inaugurated by President Sukarno on Aug. 5, 1962, the hotel was built to welcome visitors to Asian Games IV. Designed by American architect Abel Sorensen and his wife Wendy, the 25,000 square-meter hotel featured a modern T-shaped structure that offered guests unobstructed views in all directions of the capital city, and to take advantage of the warmth of the sunlight from any room.

The architects first erected two wings, the 15-story Ramayana wing and the 8-story Ganesha wing.

Hotel Indonesia was the first hotel in Indonesia built to international standards. Many heads of state and international dignitaries have stayed there or enjoyed state dinners in its dining rooms. President Sukarno hosted dinners for US Senator Ted Kennedy, for Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia, who visited Indonesia in late 1962, and for Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal in February 1964.

During its heyday, the hotel was the center of many cultural activities. The hotel's regular musical and theatrical performances catapulted several Indonesian artists to stardom, including Teguh Karya, who doubled as the hotel's stage manager, actor Slamet Rahardjo and actress Rima Melati. In 1969, the hotel hosted the Miss Indonesia pageant, the year Irma Hadisurya won.

There was even a joint event sponsored by the hotel and the newspaper with the largest circulation in the United States, The New York Times.

The hotel was also the point of reference for the city's up-and-comers. Wealthy people, successful business barons and government officials arranged their meetings and social functions there. In the mid 1970s, the Nirwana Supper Club on the highest terrace of the Ramayana Wing was the venue of choice for Jakarta elites to enjoy a fancy dinner, complete with live entertainment by popular musicians, local and international. During the same era, even the pool became a status symbol, especially among teenagers.

As Indonesia developed, the hotel started to face competition from newer hotels claiming space around Hotel Indonesia square. In April 2004, the hotel stopped operations and its management was handed over to the Kempinski hotel chain. The name changes into Hotel Indonesia Kempinski.

Since the hotel was designated a cultural heritage site by Decree of the Governor of Jakarta 475/1993, the building and all its historical assets should be well preserved and maintained.

General manager Gerhard E. Mitrovits said his management could not change the hotel's facade or basic structure because of its status as a heritage site. Unchanged without, but completely renovated within, he went on to explain the updates

We see the needs of today. We took one floor out to enlarge the lobby to allow more light to flood the space. We also took out all the walls of the rooms because they were old and the rooms were too small. We doubled the room size throughout, Mitrovits said.

The hotel's rooms were built to be 30 square meters, comfortable proportions in their day. The hotel now offers three types of rooms: deluxe and grand deluxe room between 58 and 63 square meters, and even larger suites.

Since all rooms look out upon Hotel Indonesia square's heavily trafficked thoroughfares, the management improved the building acoustics by replacing the old windows with double-glazed ones. Guests are undisturbed by sounds from outside.

Though the hotel has modernized it's interior, it continues to showcase its intact collection of Indonesian art, which summons up another era. For example, Trubus's Dewi Sri sculpture welcomes guests entering the hotel from the main approach. On the right-hand wall of the main lobby, now graced with all that extra light, stands Pesta Pura Bali, a 24x3m stone-carved relief depicting the life of the Balinese, which was created from 1962 to 1964 at the Yogyakarta Sela Binangun workshop.

Inside the hotel, G. Sidharta's large mosaic of Indonesian traditional dance graces the shell-roofed Ramayana restaurant, artist Lee Man Fong's giant painting of Indonesian flora and fauna sets the tone in the lobby and president Sukarno's poem still embellishes the entrance to the Signature restaurant.

t's easy to build a new hotel to look just like any other hotel. But this hotel can't be copied. This hotel belongs here. We want to be unique. If you're unique, people will buy, just like ladies buying handbags," Mitrovits said.

Kempinski is known worldwide as the hotel management that has a unique property portfolio, including palaces, historical landmarks and heritage buildings in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South America and Asia.

Besides preserving the hotel's architecture and artwork, the management will also make a new Heritage Room, a room dedicated to display the collection off president Sukarno.

"We will turn one banquet room into a museum or heritage room. It will display some 30 collected items of the first president, such as stamps, a piano, the first movie projector in Indonesia, the scissors used for cutting the ribbon in the inauguration ceremony, masks, and statues," Mitrovits said.

While paying attention to the renovation and building preservation, the management wants Hotel Indonesia Kempinski to be a landmark and has preserved many of its Indonesian touches compared to other hotels.

"We pay attention to details. For example, we applied batik pattern on the floral pattern carpet, the pictures on the wall, the laundry bags and even on the items in the minibar," Mitrovits said

He said his hotel would provide in each room a basket of Indonesian fruits to introduce guests to local fruits, such as passion fruit, lychee and the lychee-like rambutan. He added that the management would make the fruit basket very Indonesia and make booklets to explain the fruits.

"People only know Indonesia for Borobudur and Bali. Jakarta has a lot to offer and can do much more. The hotel works as a tourist destination as it recalls the 1960s," he said.

Despite the looming financial crisis, Mitrovits is upbeat about the hotel business. He said that since it would be a brand new start for the hotel, he was taking the estimated 10 percent loss this year in stride.

"I don't have the past. I only have the future. We will start like there is no crisis. We will start with confidence and cautious," he said.

"There is also a lot of curiosity and a nostalgic feeling about this hotel. We have a lot of frequent guests, who came here 10-20 years ago and want to stay here when they are in the city."

According to him, the management has also signed over 200 contracts with corporate clients, who are willing to do business with the hotel.

Hotel Indonesia Kempinski opens its doors to its first guests on Feb. 28 for a soft opening. As a start, the hotel will offer 30 rooms in the Ramayana wing, and open another 60 rooms in the next two weeks. The grand opening is slated in August when the renovation of the Ganesha wing has finished.

Built in the past and still undergoing renovation in the present, Hotel Indonesia will be celebrated as a reflection of the glorious 1960s in the future.

Guests can get a glimpse of the important events that took place at then Hotel Indonesia through old photos displayed at the one if its wall

A poem by president Sukarno is placed at the entrance of Signature restaurant.
