To be fair, Houston IS the largest city in the state, and Austin is #4, so it would be pathetic if they weren't.

Yep! But I'll say Austin has us beat. I like the towers going up there more, and some of them planned are pretty tall and already u/c. I'll say we're a close second until the construction begins on the towers planned below.

Towers planned for DT Houston:

1. 24 story skyhouse - under construction

2. 30 story Marriott hotel - approved

3. 50 story Chevron tower in-development stages. construction said to start within the next 12 months.

4. 41 story Hines tower approved - construction to start early next yr.

5. 34 story Skanska approved - officially announced earlier this week.

6. 38 story apartment tower proposed - some ppl are guaranteeing this will go up, possible after the old Texaco HQ reno is complete.

7. 50 story Stream tower proposed - said to have a dramatic effect on the northern skyline, and a striking curvature although the project may have been scaled back.

8. 50 story Allen Center 5 on hold - nothing new on this one since 2009.

9. 23 story Hines Tower (macys site) in-development stages. said to look like and elliptical prism. expected to be completed in Dec 2015.

New office building planned for former Luby’s site

Quote:
The developers of CityCentre are planning a new office building on the 37-acre office, retail and hotel development near the southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Beltway 8.

The eight-story building will replace the long-standing Luby’s restaurant at 825 Town & Country Way. The new building, to be called CityCentre Five, will have 195,000 square feet of office space, and the ground floor will have room for restaurants and shops.

Midway Cos. has been rolling out a steady stream of new office towers at its CityCentre development.

The six-story CityCentre Four will open this summer. Office tenants in the 120,000-square-foot building will include ERM and Perttechnical Data Systems. Restaurants Salata and the Capital Grille also will open in the building.

A not-so-modest proposal for the Astrodome

Quote:
Prime Property contributor David Kaplan offers a proposal for the Astrodome:

It’s Niagara Falls meets Paris World’s Fair meets “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

The Astrodome: A Light & Water Wonderland.

1.Exterior: A new skin on the Dome would be clear glass and give it an Apple-store like look. At night the skin would glow with underwater-like flickering colors.

2.Interior, Level Two. A second level would be constructed about three-fourths of the way up and house a planetarium/music stage. Spectators would take a space needle elevator in the center of the Dome to get to it. From Level One the space needle and the fanning-out base of the planetarium would resemble a giant flower. The dome-shaped screen would serve as a planetarium, also project light shows, shooting stars and simulated space travel journeys. Musicians, enveloped by the visuals, would perform concerts.

3.Interior, Level One. Spectators would be surrounded by a 360-degree water wall. River boat rides would take spectators through a winding water wonderland that would contain foutains, mist and spray gardens, waterfalls, other kinds of cascades and hydroponic flower gardens.
The spacious Level One would also house an immense swimming pool and water spray park for toddlers.

At night, the interior of the Dome would glow with colored lights shining on the water features. (Fort Worth’s Water Gardens make use of changing colored lights shining on water spray, on a small scale, and it is breathtaking) The space needle planetarium “flower” would be lit at night in multiple electric hues.

Level One would also house a space needle restaurant and other eateries, dessert bars and a beer garden.

I have no idea how much this baby would cost, or if it is feasible. But here’s hoping somebody comes up with some big idea to save the Astrodome — an exciting project worthy of its original promoter, the late Roy Hofheinz.
This would be cool, along with some indoor amusements like a giant water park. As always, the issue comes down to $$$....

Houston-based Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) will break ground this week on its new 10-story corporate headquarters campus in Springwoods Village in north Houston.

Located on 25.6 acres near the intersection of Interstate 45 and the planned Grand Parkway, the project will consolidate Southwestern’s more than 1,000 Houston-area employees at one location.

The 515,000-square-foot building is nearby to where Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) is building a corporate campus to consolidate 10,000 employees from around the U.S.

Southwestern's building, designed by Houston-based Gensler, is slated for completion at the end of 2014.

Currently, Southwestern employees occupy office space in several North Beltway-area office buildings near George Bush Intercontinental Airport, where the natural gas exploration and production firm's leases expire soon.

Houston-based Patrinely Group LLC is the development manager of the project, which will target LEED Gold certification.

The project leaves acreage available for future expansions by the company, according to a statement from Southwestern.

Springwoods Village is an 1,800-acre master-planned community being developed by CDC Houston Inc., a subsidiary of New York-based Coventry Development Corp.

Steve Mueller, Southwestern's president and CEO, is expected to announce a major partnership with the Montgomery County Food Bank at the groundbreaking on June 18
