Infopark is joining hands with Tata consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) to organize a charity initiative titled “TCS Fit4life Corporate Challenge – Run Miles & Bring Smiles” on February 10, 2013 at Kochi Infopark Campus, from 6.30am to 8.30am.

The run is organized with the objectives to ensure fitness awareness; raise fund for charity and contribute to social causes. The contributions received from this run would be handed over to “Cochin Cancer Society” an NGO led by famous Oncologist Dr. V P Gangadharan. The run is also open to the Corporate citizens of Kochi city.The five-mile marathon will kick start from the Infopark campus, pass through Kusumagiri and return through Infopark Express way to the starting point.

--The event is expected to be biggest Corporate Sporting event in Kerala with Celebrity Guests from various spheres of life.

Kochi to get its first free outdoor gym

Kochiites will soon get a new venue to tone their bodies and stay fit. Come June and city residents will get an opportunity to walk over and exercise at an open space on the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor using outdoor equipment - that too free of cost. With the concept of outdoor gyms getting popular, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has announced the opening of 'Wellness circle' - Kochi's first open public gym - to mark World Health Day which falls on Sunday.

The GCDA will provide 5,000 square feet area for the open fitness centre. "An NGO associated with WHO has taken up the responsibility of setting up the gym. With the support of sponsors it will place outdoor equipment which people can use for exercise," said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.

What makes the concept different is - the gym will be provided to the citizens free of charge. It will be open between 5 am and 9 pm every day. Those who require the assistance of an instructor will get it through a phone-in facility.It is pointed out that around 3,000 people come down to the stadium circle road to walk and exercise on a weekly basis. The plan is to put in place equipment for muscle toning and cardio exercises. "With the support of sponsors we plan to install 12 such machines. Gym instructors have volunteered to associate themselves with the project and will provide assistance to users. We expect about 300 to 500 people to use the gym on a weekly basis," said M A Babu, the project consultant.

According to him there are around 200 fitness centres operating in the city and it is for the first time a local body has come forward to start an outdoor gym. The World Health Day this year will focus on awareness about high blood pressure. "Kerala is becoming a centre of lifestyle diseases, and health experts have stated that walking and regular exercise can reduce the risk of or control type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and obesity," added Babu.

Ford EcoSport Gets Soft Launch in Kochi


The EcoSport SUV, which is making its public display in 12 cities, out of which Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chandigarh have already had a public viewing, will be shown at Jaipur Pink Mall and Chennai Express Avenue Mall from 12 to 14 April. Residents in Kochi can head down to Kochi Lulu Mall for the display event from 5 to 7 April.

The vehicle, which had made its debut in several countries like Brazil, Mexico and China, is yet to get an official unveiling in India. Surprisingly, Ford remains silent on the launch of the car in India.


In India, the vehicle is expected to come with a 1-litre EcoBoost petrol engine that will give 120bhp power, or the 1.5L diesel engine which would offer 90bhp.

The petrol EcoBoost EcoSport is expected to deliver a mileage of 17 kilometres per litre. Last week the Economic Times citing an insider reported that the base model of EcoSport will be priced ₹5.9 - 6 lakh and the high-end variants will be priced in the ₹9 lakh bracket.

According to reports, EcoSport is likely to be positioned as a compact sub-4 metre SUV, which would exempt it from additional excise duty.

"Scale brings in efficiency, it helps companies deliver capacity and get a better rate from the vendors and suppliers; it helps you keep your cost in check in high inflationary scenario and that's what global manufacturers really get to the table, that's what Ford has got to the table, with its ability," Ford told ET.

Earlier reports suggested that the vehicle would hit the Indian market by June, but Ford India is yet to confirm this.

2000 Rs is cool for a Kochinite's beauty

Did you know that on an average a college student or salaried youngster spends Rs 2,000 a month on hairstyling and beauty treatments in the city? Going by a city beauty saloon this is quite the norm in Kochi, where even ordinary people looking to climb the ladder of success are spending huge sums on looking more than presentable. It doesn’t matter if they are not film personalities, sports stars or socialites, or whether they are young or old, the beauty bug seems to have bitten everyone.

With people becoming more style savvy and answering more readily to the urge to bring about a metamorphosis in their looks, makeover salons are today among their favourite destinations.

“ The makeover business is highly professional and specialized today with not only youngsters but also the older men and women too using these services,” says Ms Rama Sangeeth, of Talking Heads salon, noting that age is clearly no bar for a makeover anymore. “Teenagers often bring their parents and the whole family stays young and trendy,” she adds.

Answering to the demand, Kochi is today home to the largest number of high profile salons and spas in the state. And if you thought it was just for make- up or a new hairstyle that people are seeking them out , then you had better think again. Besides beauty treatments, many salons offer services like clothing consultations, makeup lessons and jewellery advice based on the requirements of the client.

Since hair treatments and hairstyling form a major part of the business, there are exclusive salons offering these as well. Recognising the potential of the city, Studio Profile, a premium salon affiliated to L’Oreal Professional opened its branch in Kochi, its second in the country after Chennai.

“Our clients our mainly college students and young professionals. And as on an average, a college student or salaried youngster spends Rs 2,000 a month on hairstyling and beauty treatments there has been a significant increase in the revenue of hair salons in the city over the last five years,” says Livin John of Q Professional salon in Kochi, which boasts of over 150 high-end professional beauty parlours including exclusive hair salons.

If you take the small parlours into account, the city has around a 1000 in all. On an average, a salon which offers only hair treatment, does a monthly business of Rs 2 lakh and this goes up to Rs 6 lakh for premium saloons in shopping malls.

For a salon, which provides both beauty and hair services, the average turnover is today in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9 lakh a month. Which means the beauty industry in Kochi alone has a monthly turnover of not less than Rs. 6 crore.

According to Ms Rama TV reality shows too have contributed to the new trend. “For instance, youngsters get influenced by the tips on new haircuts and beauty care given by a celebrity judge like Ambika Pillai. Even brides want to experiment with hairstyles and appearances today,” she adds.

International majors open salons in state

It’s all about appearances today and the state and especially its financial capital, is now rapidly waking up to the latest trends in the beauty business which has witnessed a huge escalation in turnover over the last five years.

International majors like L’Oreal Professional and Lakme have been quick to grab the opportunity and open their salons in the state. And with Bollywood celebrities like Ambika Pillai too heading for Kochi the business is only expected to increase in days to come.

Once such big names arrive in the state, others are bound to make a beeline for it too, say industry sources. “Competition will grow and the old Darwinian theory of survival of the fittest will come into play, leaving Keralites with only the best,” says Rama Sangeeth of Talking Heads salon.
