AFL works on stadium in Azerbaijan

A Manchester architecture practice is working on a new football stadium for a club in Azerbaijan.

AFL, which specialises in designing football stadia, was commissioned to handle the development of FC Gabala's 15-000-seat stadium.

It follows a string of international business wins at AFL including the third David Beckham football academy in Brazil. AFL is also working with Foster and Partners to design a major refurbishment and extension of the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

^ Is there a demand for such a large stadium? How often will 60,000 seats be full?

Yep, if Baku and Azerbaijan are serious about the Olympics, developments such as the construction of this new Olympic Stadium in the former oil yards would be beneficial in any future bid.

Does Baku even need two large stadiums or it can be fine with just one?

If they weren't serious for the Olympics, then they wouldn't have done their bid for 2016. The go ahead of the construction of the new stadium even without the Olympics will help them in future bids.

They could have easily have shelved such plans to allow for more general infrastructure development, or simply decided to build a downsized capacity stadium.

So yes, I am serious, though they may not win, developments such as this will help them in future bids and may even give them a chance to be a Candidate city, with even greater chance of winning.

I just love Azerbaijan football... Do not ask me why... I just do... I started following it when i saw that Nikola Jolovic is playing there. And i even had an agreement for trial in one Baku club...

My question is- what's up with closed sport halls/arenas? Which is the biggest?

Palace of the Hand Games? :P

No seriously, it must be that one named after their leader, it's stated in their 2016 Olympic Bid Book as their current (only) modern arena that doesn't need permanent upgrades. :P

I could not find photos of Palace of the Hand Games but found this one.

Sport-Concert Complex (Named after Heydar Aliyev) was opened in 1990 and since that time nearby over 30 international competitions by various sport disciplines were held in it. Several World and European championships as well as different international tournaments in rhytmic gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, voleyball, handball, took place in Baku in this complex. Being the largest sports object in the country, it has all necessary conditions for helding big international competitions. There are training halls, additional rooms, and also conference halls in a complex which contain 7000 spectator places.
