Are they planning to have it ready in time for the European Challenge Cup Final in 2019?

To my eye it's the East Stand that needs a revamp, but I suppose this way they don't lose any seating capacity or corporate facilities while the work is carried out.

Kingston Park is hosting the European Continental Shield, St James Park is hosting the two major european finals (the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup).

The extension to the North Stand provides more money-spinning hospitality areas as well as new larger changing rooms for the first team. This would allow the East Stand to be knocked down for any future redevelopment if necessary or it gives extra changing areas if there are consecutive matches on the artificial pitch. Temporary stands could be built either side of the small East Stand if the capacity is required but I wouldn't imagine the Continetal Shield being much of an attraction.

Ah, I didn't realise that. I was used to an unofficial tradition of having the Challenge Cup in the same city as the Champions Cup but at a smaller venue (the 14,800 capacity Stoop and Twickenham, the 12,000 capacity Cardiff Arms Park and Millennium Stadium, the 20,000 RDS Arena and Aviva Stadium etc.), but that seems to have been done away with in the last few seasons (I should have actually remembered being a couple of minutes from going to last season's final until Stade nicked the game against us at the death ).
