BOLE, Addis Ababa | Rosetta Metro Plaza | 16 F | Proposed

Full Article is in the Diaspora thread!

About the building:
Quote:
A diaspora returnee from China, Tewodros, turning 39, is set to stir that amusement once more by bringing the latest technology that revolutionalized the entertainment industry across the planet - 4D cinema. Combing a 3D film with physical effects, a 4D film will not only capture the attention of the viewers, but also make them experience whatever is going inside the film. Viewers feel for real, for instance, the rain in 4D movies, smell scents and sense touches from the movie characters “I have seen 4D movies in Japan and the experience is crazy,” Tewodros says. “It feels as if you are inside the film, feeling and sensing for real whatever is going on inside the film.”

Yet, the 4D cinema is only the highlight of the investor’s multi-purpose business venture set to be put together inside a 16-storey building, which, according to the plan, will incorporate a high-tech shopping mall, a star designated hotel and a state-of-the-art 4D movie multiplex.

Having a rare type of design completely different from the commonly seen four-sided or box-shaped buildings sprouting in Addis Ababa, the 16-storey structure, named Rosetta Metro Plaza, which will be erected on a plot opposite Friendship city center off Bole Road, will have an open five-floor shopping mall (from the ground to the fifth floor) each having a 1000 sq.m. area, incorporate seven state-of-the-art cinemas and sport a 150-room star designated hotel, each purpose built and targeting niche markets.

In order to entertain guests, be it transit passengers or tourists, the multi-purpose building will have seven cinemas, the largest one of which will be for public use and featuring the latest technology in the global entertainment industry - a 4D cinema, while the rest, with a seat of 12 to 24, will cater for families or small interest groups booking orders, according to the investors. The multiplex will show different movies simultaneously according to the choice of customers.

Designed by a diaspora returnee from the U.S., the 16-storey structure, which will have a three-level parking underground, will be built by a Chinese company and open for service next year, according to Tewodros.

I thought the 4D was a typo but it does exist, below is the wiki page about 4D films.

4-D, yeah, it's when they add movement and the like, they have it at Disney. I like the design a lot, the components, and the whole plan.

Pick and choose! That's what I'm talking about. Hopefully we shall see more from this "diaspora returnee", whatever his name is.

Or at Dembel, where there was a 1/2 foot of mud where we parked. This building is the kind of thing I've always wished was built in Ethiopia.

Dembel has a ton of parking inside! Multi-level and everything. You didn't have to park outside.

Not when I went... but now that you mention it I remember a parking ramp. But the yellow they painted it in is hideous.

it's a disaster... i gave on and i would just park on the other side, there was always parking at Zola and i would just walk the rest of the way. or i would cut through the street where the hall is and go down and park by that one hotel i don't remember the name but i call it caesars palace lol (below and little left of friendship)

There's a hotel called Caesar's Court Hotel behind Bole Mini, if that's the one you're talking about. The parking at Friendship is atrocious though. I guess that's what you get when you turn your underground parking into a supermarket! Not that parking itself was enough to begin with. I wonder how people will park once the Bole road expansion project is done! It's unbelievable how building owners in Addis can get so short sighted.

I think it should be mandated by law to build underground parking if it's a shopping center or office building over a certain number of floors.

The site is looking pretty quiet so i assume building commences 2012 rather than arrives 2012 ..i assume to be up and running by 2014/2015 would be doing well

It's actually mandated by law and has been for many years, it's just not enforced as well as it should be. In fact, no developer's building permit will get approval from the city administration if it doesn't present a parking plan along with the building design. The problem is that developers know of the very lax enforcement by the authorities, so they show a valid underground or ground level parking plan to get the building permit and then turn around and convert the designated parking space into more commerical space, storage, or other use that 'generates revenue'. There was actually a special programme on it recently on Etv.
