I got 10, though I admit I was itching to know the whole list and "gave up"!

Wow, los angeles at 36? Philadelphia, columbus, toledo were more populated than los angeles?

I thought the gold rush put in a lot of population in california along with the good weather.

Those cities were the thriving metropolis' of the day. People flocked to those cities because of the economic booms and jobs available in those cities on the cusp of the industrial revolution. Viva la rust belt!

LA back then was dry, when the water gets there, then the people do too. The whole West is only as populated as now because of the transportation of water.

I thought Las vegas became possible due to hoover dam, as LA is by the coast but I guess there is no fresh water rivers there.
