Weird times indeed

Looks to me like much of the flooding is around the main High Street in Nairobi, Kenyatta Avenue. If they can quickly be done with the promised reconstruction of the Avenue, it will be one step towards solving this.

What a big shame. How can a mound of garbarge be left for weeks?.I can now authoritatively say that Nairobi is worse off now than in 2007.

What astounded me more is to learn that by complaining about inefficiencies of NCC here at Ssc we are viewed with disdain, some of us would rather we showcase the magical Nairobi to the world.

Chief, it is no longer the "magical Nairobi", at least not today. But we cannot afford to lose hope, for we have seen better in the past!

NCC, is just too corrupt to do anything. Let's hope the county government will do something when it fully kicks off after next year's elections. Unfortunately, the best candidates for the governor seat are still former crooks from NCC.

Nema warns city council over piliing garbage

Quote:
The National Environment Management Authority has put the City Council of Nairobi on notice over uncollected garbage. Nairobi county NEMA boss Titus Simiyu said the council was exposing Nairobi residents to environmental hazards by failing to perform its duties. “It is unfortunate to see heaps of uncollected and dumping of solid waste in several undesignated sites in the city and its environs. We have already notified the council and warned them over irregular disposals and collection of wastes. If they don’t carry out their roles as required we will take them to court to compel them to be responsible,” Simiyu said.

He was speaking during a visit to parts of Pumwani area where part of the road reserves had been converted to dumping sites with heaps of garbage. Simiyu said apart from the waste causing a healthy concern to residents of the area, they were a cause for water and soil pollution besides an eyesore that is destroying the city’s beauty.

However, when reached for comment the city authorities through Buti Kimani, the acting director for environmental services, said the city council has been overwhelmed by the accumulation of waste, which had slowed down collection of the garbage for ultimate disposal at dumping sites following a strike three weeks ago by the contracted garbage collectors over delayed payments. “But as we talk now, the contracted private garbage collectors are back after a settlement to the dispute was reached, and are now working to ease the accumulation of waste on all road reserves and public places, though the process is a bit slow but in the next few days all the heaps you are talking about will have been cleared,” he said. On sustainable solid waste management for the city, Buti said they were working with NEMA and Japan International Cooperation Agency in rolling out an Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan that will address the waste menace conclusively.
These are hard times indeed

Why don't you draw up a business plan, submit your proposal to the relevant authorities? You never know...

You're 17? Well you have nothing to loose, that's a good way to network, he may put you in contact with the right persons. Give it your best shot.

CITY HALL Sh3Billion CONSPIRACY

Quote:
Nairobi’s only working fire station could soon become a shopping mall, if City Hall pushes through plans to allocate the plot to a private developer.

Internal memos seen by The Nairobi Law Monthly show that Mayor George Aladwa and immediate former Town Clerk Philip Kisia approved the relocation of the fire station from Tom Mboya Street to undisclosed location outside the town.

The plan came to the fore on January 20, when the chief valuer, acting on the instruction of the mayor and town clerk, directed the chief city engineer, who is also in-charge of the fire brigade, to give up space for the construction of a “kiosk”.

This sparked protests among the firefighters, who argued that the station was too congested to create room for a non-core activity.

City Engineer S.K. Mburu said putting up a kiosk at the station is a health and security risk.

In a confidential memo dated March 27, 2012, to the Chief Valuer, Mr Mburu said: “Reference is made to your memo ref: VAL/62/SG/1/0/GTW/fo dated January 20, 2012, please note that the space in question is used for storage of foam compound drums for fire fighting purposes.

“Further, it will be unsafe to built a kiosk next to an 11KVA transformer and relay room due to the risks associated with the same,” says Mr Mburu.

Mr Mburu also warned that the council had in the past lost its prime land to private developers who had unprocedurally been allowed to operate from its premises.

“It is also noted that the council has lost several plots earmarked for development of fire stations. It is therefore recommended that no part of any fire station property should be leased out,” read the memo. “In fact, we should be expanding these facilities to meet the ever rising demand. Based on the above, the space should never be leased out.”

Investigations by The Nairobi Law Monthly established that six prime plots set aside for fire stations at independence have been illegally allocated to individuals over the years. Conservative estimates put the value of the plots at Sh3 billion.

For instance, in Westlands, off Waiyaki Way, the land on which the old Safaricom House sits was meant for fire station that was to serve Westlands area and northern parts of the city. The plot, initially LR1870/111/284, was sub-divided and allocated to Gideon Moi with a new title deed, LR No 209/13263.

Another Plot LR 209/8844 in Lunga Lunga area is now a Kenya Pipeline Company container depot with a new title LR No 129/66. The plot was earmarked for a fire station, which would have been strategically located to respond to the fire that claimed 75 people and left another 118 injured in the Sinai slum in September last year.

Contacted for comment, Mr Kisia dismissed the allegations, saying the fire station was a key facility that cannot be sold.

Seeing this then several new fire stations should be built along Thika rd to service the areas around Nairobi, all the way to Thika what do u guys think

The ISO certificate that was awarded to CCN is certified to have been fake. The newscasters are calling it 'Eyesore cerificate'.

Kisia must have thought that by CCN being awarded an "eyesore" certificated, that would have granted him political mileage... woi shock on him!
