The real Kwai killed over 1.50 lakh Tamils Story of enslaved labour in Japanese railway project between 1940 & 1942
Author: B. Kolappan

CHENNAI: It may not be The Bridge on the River Kwai, but this documentary on the tragic death of over 1.5 lakh Tamil workers is more real than the Oscar-winning David Lean film.
What the 1957 film does not tell, this one does: the story of over two lakh Tamil emigrants from Malaysia and Burma, who were forced to labour between 1940 and 1942 on a 415 km.-railway track between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar), including a bridge on the Kwai, as part of Japan’s Greater Asia plan.
A new documentary titled Siam-Burma: Marana Railpathai (Thailand-Burma: The Death Railway) by Puducherry-based academician R. Kurinjivendan sheds light on the dark event. The hour-long film will be screened at R.K.V. Studios in Chennai on Saturday.
“The Japanese estimated that it would take five years to complete the project. If it was over in 15 months, you can imagine how these poor workers toiled to lay the track and a road alongside,” said Mr. Kurinjivendan, an assistant professor at the Arignar Anna Arts and Science College, Karaikal.
Only 35,000 returned, as per a British census after World War II, indicating that over 1.50 lakh Tamils perished. They fell victim to snakes and insects, cholera, malaria and Beriberi. “Some of them committed suicide, unable to bear the burden and the Japanese torture,” says the academician, who began his project in 2002-03. Though many communities, including Mukkulathor and Gounder, migrated, the majority were Dalits from Chengalpattu and North Arcot, he found.

Ramps near rail track to reduce elephant deaths
Author: V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: In a bid to eliminate incidence of elephant deaths on tracks, the Forest Department has started constructing ramps on either side of the track B on the Madukkarai–Walayar section of the Coimbatore–Palakkad line. The facility will be ready in 15 days.
Since 1978, 17 elephants had died in 12 accidents along the 16.25-km-long track A and 18-km-long track B along the stretch of Podanur–Palakkad section. After a couple of elephant deaths in the last two months, a study of the accident-prone spots and the behavioural pattern of the jumbos was taken up through camera trap images.
Elephants were found to be crossing the railway track to reach a water body. In addition, the 25-ft elevation on both sides of the track forced the jumbos to slow down on the track and ascend or descend the gradient, said A. Periasamy, Divisional Forest Officer.
The ramps will provide a gentle slope making it easy for animals to climb and descend from the height, he says. ACC cements at Madukkarai has offered to provide cement waste for forming the base for the ramp which will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 6 lakh.
On completion of the ramps, cameras will be installed to study the behavioural pattern of the elephants. Based on feedback, a decision would be taken on constructing ramps at other vulnerable stretches with improvements and modifications if required, he said.

Water trough near hills

The Forest Department is also creating a water trough near the hills. This will prevent or reduce instances of elephants crossing the track to reach the water body, the DFO said.
Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has already cleared vegetation on the sides of the track at curves to enhance visibility for the loco pilot. A request has been made to clear the vegetation along the tracks for a further distance of 3 km, Mr. Periasamy said. The number of boards alongside the tracks to caution loco pilots to slow down is also being increased, he added.

I think this is the first time LHB spls are operated via Konkan route to Velankanni

Don't know whether Thiruvallur-Thiruvalangadu-Arakkonam 3 and 4 line commissioned and put to use for dedicated express/mail/freight operations.
Last week, during my travel in Kovai express, had noticed express/mails taking the usual 1st line towards AJJ. So trains continue to crawl at Thiruvallur.

This will not solve the killings..

Better re-route the whole line for 15 Km to avoid the forest/hilly zone.
Lot of plain land are available in the palghat pass.
Spend a 100 crore for the sake to save Elephant and forest habitats.

Its not on understanding when projects go to CCEA.

What railways told on MDU-MEJ-TN/NCJ and TVC-CAPE projects?

All these projects were announced at the same time and these were taken up by railways exclusively and asking for TN projects JV.

Earlier they said MDU-MEJ-TN will be taken up soon but now changed stance.

You still support RM might be you are pro RM/BJP than a neutral person.

You conveniently leave other states were not requested for JV for 25000+ crores but TN is asked for MDU-MEJ-TN which also has good RoI.

Also in Tweets by Railways on the new project map it was explicitly mentioned MAS-Gudur 136 KMS is not sanctioned for MAS-NDLS section.

Why railways didn't take it when the entire MAS-NDLS section is taken up for 3rd line?

Also as per their map MAS-SBC is high density route but no new additional line projects is planned. Even KPD-JTJ 3rd line section surveyed earlier was not taken up.

Noticed that too. It remained non functional at that time. The jn was super clean.

The SA-KRR passenger spl is providing the connection to Kovai express both the ways for the people of rasipuram, namakkal, karur, infact the entire stretch, for the day time travel to chennai. The combo is not known to many it seems.

And my 12675 did 4.45 hrs flat to SA despite the crawlings at thiruvallur, SA outer, stoppages and couple of TSRs enroute.

Yep.What else one can expect from Commies.. One of the main reasons for China becoming a manufacturing hub is their robust railway system in both pax & freight segments with less freight rates.

RM realised that and bringing down the freight fares which has started to show +ve results but still a long way to go..

The below article throws more light why and how IR bleeding ..
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...w/53894636.cms

Hope corporatisation of IR follows soon ..

So, most probably Nellai would not get LHB rakes. I would be happy if Nellai too gets LHB rakes.
SR has received 9 LHB SL coaches from ICF alone in August and 1 First AC from RCF. Jun - Till date received 33 LHB SL coaches. SR would have more coaches after any train RF/Nellai is made LHB. Need to wait and watch which train will get LHB rake.
Good that SR started to use lie over LHB rakes for specials.

Very true...
I took the MAS-Mysore and Palani trains twice in the last one month after the inauguration of the 3rd and 4th line. But both times, the trains took the 1st/2nd lines and the trains were trailing the suburban trains in front of them.

Some one, please inform the SG that they should sign JV for this 3rd/4th line and pay the money back to IR/SR...Who knows, only if they agree for JV and settle the money, SR/IR will really put to use these lines for passenger train ops....
