Russian Architecture had the chance to evolve into something more Grandeur (along the lines of St Basil's Cathedral) weren't it for the Mongol invasion in 1237-40. After Russia was conquered, a 10% tribute was paid for 250 years. Some principalities escaped the invasion (by agreeing to pay the tribute right away) but lost their main trading partners. But I still like the northern churches the way they are.
