Andhra Pradesh launches third phase of Hitec City

Andhra Pradesh launches third phase of Hitec City A late starter, AP wants to be the country’s leading BPO destination

Cyber Pearl Hitec City

Cyber Pearl, the third phase of the Hitec City project in Hyderabad was inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh chief mininster Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. It is the first project by LTIAL, a joint venture between L&T Infocity and Singapore-based business space provider Ascendas. The first two phases were the Cyber Towers and Cyber Gateway projects.

Cyber Pearl is Ascendas’ first venture in Hyderabad, and it’s third in India after the International Tech Park Bangalore, its flagship project in Karnataka, and the Gurgaon Tech Park in Haryana. Currently, Ascendas is developing its fourth project, the International Tech Park at Chennai.

The new facility is 80 percent occupied with HSBC, Keane India, Nipuna and the US-based Market Tools taking up 2.7 lakh sqft of space.

“The expansion of Cyber Pearl would be completed by early 2005. L&T and Ascendas are planning to take up other infrastructure projects such as airports, roads, buildings and townships,” Chong Saik Ching, president and CEO, Ascendas, said.

The engineering, construction and contracts (ECC) division of L&T has bagged another major contract from HSBC. The new project is a build-to-suit mega project for the HSBC group’s data processing centre in Hyderabad. L&T has already developed an IT park for HSBC in Visakhapatnam in the State.

Talking about the new project, A Ramakrishna, president of L&T (ECC) said, “The new project will be developed near Cyber Pearl in Hitec City and is expected to be completed within 12 months. As part of this, the company will construct two buildings with a total space of 8 lakh sqft and an investment of Rs 200 crore.”

The chief minister said that the state government is planning to set up a separate promotional agency for single-window clearance of mega infrastructure projects. The state government has decided to develop 22 new townships along the 8-lane 16 km super ring road around the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secuderabad. The single-window process agency will streamline the clearances for infrastructure projects and work as a facilitator to all investments in the state.

“As per our estimates, there is a demand for 30 million sqft of office space over next four years. To meet this demand, we need to take up new projects and for this we are inviting global players. Singapore should share its experience, technology and invest in the state,” he said.

International airport to become operational by 2008, says CM

Quote:
The Rs 1,400-crore international airport at Shamshabad is likely to become operational by 2008. Chief minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, said that within the next ten days the concessional agreement would be signed.

“The financial closure will take about three months and after about 33 months the airport will become functional,” he added.

The airport is to be developed under a joint venture with 26 per cent equity participation by the state and the central governments. The GMR-MAHB consortium – the private developer of the project – would hold the remaining 74 per cent.

The airport would have an initial capacity of 50 lakh passengers and one lakh metric tonne of cargo handling facility.

About 3,367 acres of private land and 1,909 acres of government land have been acquired for developing the airport.

A 4,260-metre long and 60-metre wide runway is also being planned for the project.

I don't know which airport will be completed first. But the Air Sahara hub, if it becomes operational, will boost Hyderabad's economy. Hyderabad is the most centrally located of the six metros. It's a good choice. And assuming Air Sahara is a hundred times better than Air India or Indian Airlines, the transiting at Hyderabad should be smooth.

Hyderabad scores over Bangalore in location. That's my view.

But Bangalore should not feel bad. It is Air Deccan's main base and if Air Deccan can get over its tech problems and succeed with its low cost model, then that would be a boost for Bangalore.

They were still drafting agreements in June 2002 as per the APIND site.

As per a Singapore govt web site it will start handover from Dec 2004.

And in an interview in Sept 2004 APHB director says: "We wanted to move into an area where no one else has entered. At the moment we have enough in our hand with work on Singapore township at Pocharam and Malaysian township at Kukatpally underway."

Hyderabad: India's Genome Valley

The government of Andhra Pradesh has christened the city 'Genome Valley.'

Hyderabad: India's Genome Valley

November 30, 2004
http://us.rediff.com/money/2004/nov/30spec.htm

"If Bangalore is the Silicon Valley, Hyderabad is the Genome Valley. India's future is in biotechnology," Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy is excited as he makes a presentation on the biotech boom that is taking place in Hyderabad.

Truly, Dr Reddy has made a point.

Hyderabad has fast emerged as the biotech hub of India. The government of Andhra Pradesh has christened the city 'Genome Valley.'

"Genome Valley is our answer to the Silicon Valley of Bangalore. It is making waves not just in India, but across the world," an official assisting Dr Reddy in the biotechnology sector points out.

The figures that the chief minister's office provides are impressive. A journey later to the biotech clusters in and around Hyderabad testifies to the credentials of Genome Valley.

Genome Valley is India's first state-of-the-art biotech hub that provides research, training, collaboration and manufacturing activities for biotech companies. It is spread over 600 square kilometers. More than 100 biotech companies are operating out of the Genome Valley today.

"Yes, Hyderabad has already become India's biotech hub. It is our Genome Valley as several leading scientific research organizations and biotech companies are functioning from here," says Deepanwita Chattopadhyaya, Chief Executive Officer, ICICI Knowledge Park in Hyderabad.

The Park is situated in an aesthetically landscaped lush green 200-acre campus in Turkapally, near Hyderabad. It offers plots of land -- of varying sizes -- to build research centres and pilot plants as per specific requirements of resident companies.

But what did the Andhra Pradesh government do to identify that biotechnology was the engine of growth for the state to succeed?

First, some years ago, the government launched India's first biotech venture fund with a corpus of $30 million. It was a joint venture between the Andhra Pradesh Investment Development Corporation and Dynam Venture East of the US. The venture fund began to finance start-up biotech companies.

Soon, there was a rush from Indian and foreign companies to Hyderabad, making it Genome Vallaey. Some of these firms are:

Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park: The Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) project is spread over 400 acres. It provides state-of-the art infrastructure with support facilities like instrumentation facilities, incinerator, secondary effluent treatment plant, distilled, deionised DM water, cold storage and water housing facility, and animal house.

It has a technology incubation centre. A belt of 25 kilometers around the park has been declared as a 'pollution free zone.' The Park runs a pilot plant for the validation of the commercial viability of technologies and products.

ICICI Knowledge Park: It is a world-class centre for leading-edge, business-driven research in the country. The Park is also India's first knowledge network for collaboration between research. It is a 200-acre campus with world-class infrastructure and support facilities. It is promoted by the ICICI Group. It encourages research and development in all knowledge-intensive fields. The current focus of the Park is on the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals technology, specialty chemicals, new materials, information technology and telecommunications.

Biotechnology Incubation Centre: It runs research and development laboratories, multi-utility plant, specialised pilot plant and an analytical and quality control center.

Agri -Business Incubator of ICRISAT: The Agri-Business Incubator provides business support to existing and new agri-business, developed and housed at ICRISAT. The incubator helps in reducing the risk in commercialization of agri-technologies. It has built a network with R&D centers of excellence, universities, academic institutions and agricultural-related incubators and incubates globally.

Apart from these major parks, Genome Valley is home to the leading biotechnology institutions and private pharma companies.

The institutions include: Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, National Institute for Nutrition, and Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics.

Top private biotech companies include: Avra Laboratories, Bharat Biotech International, Bijam Biosciences, Biological E. Ltd, Bioserve Biotechnologies, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Genotex International, GVK Bio, Indian Immunologicals Ltd, Indigene Pharmaceuticals, Jupiter Biosciences, Krebs Biochemicals, Microbiomed Products, Nuziveedu Seeds, Prabhat Agri Biotech, Satyam Computer Services, Shantha Biotechnics, Tata Consultancy Services and Vimta Labs.

Chief Minister Reddy says Genome Valley is forging ahead. "We have a well-defined policy to forge a private-public partnership in the development of biotechnology in the state," says Reddy.

The government's target, the chief minister says, is the large number of scientists from Andhra Pradesh, who are at present engaged in research, academics or manufacturing in the field of biotechnology in the US.

Officials say Genome Valley will leapfrog into the big league in the days to come.

The signs are showing in the projects that are in the pipeline:

An international life science institute is being set up in Hyderabad.

Indian Council of Medical Research is setting up a National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health of the US.

An Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Bank, a bio-medical research centre and a state-of-the art maternity/ neo-natal hospital are being set up by the Pacific Health Care Holdings, Singapore.

Emaar awards Larsen and Toubro AED 108m contract to build Hyderabad Convention Centre in India

The 4,000-seating capacity Convention Centre will be India's largest and easily the most technologically advanced convention facility. It is an integrated 291,000sq.ft facility abutting with a 300-room business hotel on 15 acres of land. The air-conditioned Centre can be configured to increase seating capacity to about 6,500 and is equipped with several automated features to facilitate diverse utilisation, with all facilities and amenities that a world standard gathering would conceivably seek.

Emaar has engaged the Scottish firm RMJM as architects for the Convention Centre scheduled for completion in December 2005.

'Our decision in favour of Larsen & Toubro Limited for the Convention Centre was reached on the basis of price, proven abilities and experience in the execution of several complex and demanding real-estate development projects across India,' said Mohamed Ali Alabbar, Chairman, Emaar Properties. 'Emaar stringently applies international best practices on all its real estate developments and we are delighted that Larsen & Toubro have matched our expectations.

'When this Centre is considered in the context of expanded facilities for air and surface transportation, commercial, residential and hospitality, Hyderabad will truly develop to become the geographical and event-related hub for India,' Alabbar continued.

Alabbar was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the India Economic Summit, currently being held in New Delhi. A senior Emaar delegation had met with Tadao Chino, President of Asian Development Bank in Hyderabad recently and explained to him and his accompanying delegation how the Centre will develop.

Also being developed by Emaar is Boulder Hills, a world class leisure and residential community in Hyderabad. The total cost for both these prestigious projects is estimated at AED 492 million. These projects are being developed in partnership with Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (APIIC) an agency of the government of Andhra Pradesh.

"We are pleased with the cooperation and true sense of partnership from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and this experience points to further and more expanded relationships in the state and elsewhere in the sub-continent. India is an important partner country for Emaar Properties and we are excited to be conducting serious business in a market that is going to develop into several multiples of what we see today,' he added.

Emaar has also commenced constructing Boulder Hills in Hyderabad. The world-class leisure and residential community features an 18-hole championship golf course, villas and apartments, and an exclusive 5+ star resort style hotel.

Larsen & Toubro Limited is India's largest engineering and construction conglomerate with additional interests in electricals, electronics, submarine pressure vessels, space vehicles, and IT. The company has a global spread of over 30 offices and has constructed many of India's prized landmarks.

Emaar globally recognised as the Middle East's biggest lifestyle property developers is the only UAE listed company to be featured on the Dow Jones Arabia Titans 50 stock Index. The 7-year old company reported an impressive AED 1.039 billion in profits for the period ended 30 September 2004, compared to AED 503 million in the same period a year ago, or a growth of 107%. Revenues grew 59% to AED 3.808 billion during this period from AED 2.392 billion for the same period. The Company had a market capitalization of over AED 26 billion as of 25th September this year.

Emaar Properties, which pioneered freehold ownership in the UAE has delivered nearly 8,000 homes to owners. This is out of over 13,000 homes across several lifestyle communities that are in various stages of development.

Emaar has started work on the world's most prestigious urban development, which includes the world's tallest residential building, the Burj Dubai.
