Summer Olympic Games

The city of Rio de Janeiro will host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. This followed three rounds of voting by members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 2 October 2009 at the 121st IOC Session, in Copenhagen, Denmark..

Seven cities were initially proposed by their National Olympic Committees to host the 2016 Games: Chicago (USA), Prague (CZE), Tokyo (JPN), Rio de Janeiro (BRA), Baku (AZE), Doha (QAT) and Madrid (ESP). On 4 June 2008, the IOC Executive Board selected four cities to enter the Candidate City phase of the bid process. Listed in the official order of drawing of lots, these cities were:

- Chicago (USA)

- Tokyo (JPN)

- Rio de Janeiro (BRA)

- Madrid (ESP)

During the vote on 2 October 2009, Rio de Janeiro eventually triumphed by taking 66 votes compared to Madrid’s 32. This gave Rio the majority that it needed to be elected as the host city for the 2016 Games. Rio had to overcome stiff competition, however, in the form of Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid in order to get the Games.

PH ready for Rio Olympic q’lifier

AFTER clinching one of three continental berths in the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Spain, Gilas Pilipinas will also embark on an ambitious trip to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Basketball godfather Manny V. Pangilinan yesterday said he is open to bringing back the Fiba Asia Championship on home soil in 2015. The tournament serves as the qualifier for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics the following year.

3-on-3 basketball won't be part of 2016 Olympics

Officials from FIBA tried their best, but 3-on-3 basketball won't be a part of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. According to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today, the International Olympic Committee made the official ruling last month to maintain status quo for Olympic basketball.

In a statement, the IOC's executive board said "any request from International Federations (IFs) that would result in a higher number of athletes or increased number of medals, thereby adding to the cost and complexity of the Games, would not be considered."

Michael Phelps doesn't close door on 2016 Olympic Rio return

The last time Michael Phelps was on a national stage – the 2012 London Olympics – the most decorated Olympic athlete in history insisted he was done with swimming.

But speaking to the Associated Press at the swimming world championships in Barcelona, Phelps sounds like he's singing a different tune.

I wonder if we get a medal this time... Swish, the Philippines need more athletes. We have a 100 Million Citizens and no medal while Jamaica with less than 3 Million people has 12 medals (referring to 2012 London). I know population does not matter, but c'mon, what are the odds?

Boxing’s our best Olympic medal hope, and boy does it look dim now.
I’m not discounting come-from-behind dramas or fairy-tale endings but from where I’m sitting, there’s no way the country can end its long-running search for the Olympic gold in Rio.
Not in this Olympiad. Not with these crop of athletes – and sports leaders.
And certainly not with just one bet having a realistic shot at the gold.

Rio de Janeiro Olympics hope to avoid turmoil and 3-year countdown begins toward 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil's World Cup starts in just over 10 months, and the three-year countdown for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics is starting to roll.
This should be a great moment for Brazil and for Rio, the city at the centre of the festivities. Yet fierce protests at the Confederations Cup in June, a warm-up for the World Cup, and a chaotic visit to Rio last month by Pope Francis have some questioning if Brazil — and a city largely known for beach life and samba — can buckle down and pull off sports' two mega-events.

Head of Rio Olympic planning coordination committee resigns

RIO DE JANEIRO – The head of the public body coordinating planning for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro has resigned, raising concerns about the city's ability to stage the first games in South America.
The resignation of Marcio Fortes, who headed the Olympic Public Authority, was confirmed Wednesday by the organization. The APO said Fortes handed in his resignation to Brazil President Dilma Rousseff.
Fortes had complained that the office lost its influence.
The APO coordinates preparations for the games between Brazil's federal, state and local governments, but is not responsible for delivery or construction of Olympic-related projects.
The resignation may concern inspectors from the International Olympic Committee, who will be in Rio at the end of the month to assess progress on preparations for the games. The IOC has expressed concerns that planning and construction are moving slowly.

McKayla Maroney eyes Rio Summer Olympics in 2016

Gymnast McKayla Maroney has her sights set on the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016. In fact, she's had those games in her mind since her now-famous look of consternation while standing on the medal platform when she earned a silver for vaulting in London.

"I was standing there thinking, 'Man, now I've got to go to Rio. I was already thinking about what I had to do for 2016," Maroney tells the AP.

Rio Olympics a shame, says Mayor Eduardo Paes

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro has said it is a shame his city will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2016 because Brazil lacks a sports policy.

Eduardo Paes said that his city should not pay for high performance athletes.

"That is the role of the federal government," he said in an interview to be aired on Friday on the television channel ESPN.

Mayor Paes said Rio should be promoting sports for everyone.

WADA revokes accreditation of Rio doping lab

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has revoked the accreditation of the Rio de Janeiro laboratory that would have handled testing for the 2016 Summer Games for failing to comply with international standards.

The decision marks the second time the Rio laboratory has fallen below the required standards, the world anti-doping body said in a statement on Tuesday.

Olympics: IOC has over $500M to split among governing bodies

BUENOS AIRES - Sports federations refusing to modernize and professionalize operations will be doomed to fail as the global sports business experiences unprecedented financial growth, the Olympic sports federations' umbrella organization said on Thursday.

The 26 federations which took part in the 2012 London Olympics will divide up more than half a billion dollars in International Olympic Committee money, the largest amount ever dished out by the Olympic body.
