Looks like some historic old buildings in downtown Clearwater are almost gone.

http://www.facebook.com/DowntownClearwater

"The historic Turner house, Fulmer Photo shop on S Ft Harrison Avenue and Carriage house at 525 Palm are slated from demolition. Permits have been issued after the recent asbestos removal. These buildings have remained mostly vacant for years. Some work to the existing buildings could have gone a long way and maintained some historic relevance to the area near Harbor Oaks. Street parking is not available in this area that is one major issue for storefronts across the street that still remain empty more than 5 years after the development seen in the first picture."

These pix are 2 different projects. I think the bottom one ist the new part of the Holiday Inn, already under construction and the top one is supposed to be developed on Coronado.

Marina Cantina restaurant progresses toward opening on Clearwater Beach
By Ayana Stewart, Times Staff Writer
Thursday, August 6, 2015 11:57am

CLEARWATER — When you get to the Clearwater Beach Marina, it's clear the place is undergoing major renovations.

A scaffolding tower sits near the building's entrance. Construction workers mill around work areas filled with tools. And duct work is visible in the building's lobby.

"It's terrible for our business," said Tom Wolkowsky, who operates a gift shop at the city-owned marina. "It looks like everything is under construction."

But he said he thinks the finished building will bring in enough foot traffic to make up for the current inconvenience.

Council approves plan for parking garage on Clearwater Beach
Times staff
Thursday, August 20, 2015 9:04pm

CLEARWATER — The City Council on Thursday unanimously approved an amended development agreement with the developers of the Pelican Walk Shopping Center to build a public parking garage on Clearwater Beach.

The city will pay $11.3 million to own 450 of the 702 spaces in the garage that has already broken ground behind the shopping center at 483 Mandalay Ave., according to Mayor George Cretekos.

Cretekos said the garage would help meet demand for parking on the beach on typical afternoons but acknowledged it will still not be enough to accommodate the hordes of drivers on busy holiday weekends.

The city has not yet established a fee schedule for the spaces, but Cretekos said officials intend to lease sections of the garage to business owners who may then offer spaces to their employees.

Workshops starting this week regarding the North Marina District

Renaissance ahead for Clearwater’s aging Marina area
By Steven Girardi | Tribune Staff
Published: August 22, 2015

CLEARWATER – The local foot traffic in the North Fort Harrison Avenue area included a fair share of drug addicts and prostitutes when Nancy O’Neill gambled and decided to open a restaurant five years ago.

She soon found a way to deal with that threat, calling on some old friends.

“When I first opened, I had a motorcycle club come down. That opened some eyes,” she said. “They think I’m crazy, so they kind of leave me alone.”

Now, she said, on Saturday nights, the parking lot at Nauti-Nancy’s at 700 Eldridge St. “looks like a Mercedes commercial.” New customers and old-time Clearwater families alike, including Mayor George Cretekos, fill the colorful Caribbean-themed restaurant on a regular basis, she said.

With help from police, and with a highly-rated seafood and Cajun menu, O’Neill has staked out a place in an almost forgotten neighborhood the city of Clearwater has targeted as its next redevelopment area.

In the next three months, beginning on Wednesday, the city planning department will be hosting monthly community meetings where residents, business people and anyone interested can offer ideas on what this Old Clearwater Bay neighborhood might become.

I think the planning/take action stuff should go in the URBN forum.

We start mixing planning stuff in the same threads as development stuff, and it's gonna get messy imo.

I mean, I was posting it here since the fact that the city wants to do something with the area is development news.

Ok. Then whatever urbn stuff we cross post here, we'll just put it wherever it sort of fits in the best. Then we can delete the urbn forum, which without such content intended for it, literally serves no purpose here. It's getting zero participation here anyways.

Took a few dirty pictures of the Nolen apartments in downtown Clearwater. This is the north west corner of the development going vertical.

Is there a specific thread for this one or better place to post?

The Nolen has a new FB page. Looks like they'll be updating it regularly:

CLEARWATER (FOX 13) - A familiar "visioning" process is playing out in the area just north of downtown Clearwater: Citizens brainstorm while consultants listen. Then the consultants playback what they think they heard. What do you think?

That second step occurred Tuesday night with the presentation of three different redevelopment scenarios for Clearwater's North Marina district. That area includes the popular Seminole boat ramp, which nobody foresees going away. What do you think?

"Of course we can still maintain the boat launch here and that's our goal" senior city planner Kate See told FOX 13 News. "But how could we add some amenities to this?"
