HDMC, PWD fail to upkeep beauty of roads

DHARWAD: HDMC and PWD have implemented many projects to beautify and keep the city green. But where they fail is in their maintenance.

For instance, the road which connects Jubilee Circle, popularly known as College Road, to Karnataka University, is not maintained properly. Some statues placed on the divider have collapsed while others need a clean-up operation. If officials don't wake up, other statues too will collapse,'' said V Manjallapur, a motorist.

Shivakumar Balagi, a KCD student, said when HDMC undertook beautification of roads, the city looked good. But without proper maintenance, the roads and gardens are in a sorry state, he said.

The plants in the divider have dried up due to lack of timely watering, and now some thorn bushes are growing there, robbing the road of its beauty,'' he added.

BA Sangreshkoppa, zonal officer of Gandhinagar, said that they will soon submit a proposal to higher authorities on the beautification of the road.

Recently we have received a complaint regarding the statues. We will soon restore the statues to good condition,'' said sources in Nirmithi Kendra, a government agency.

Clear property tax dues to get building permission

HUBLI: The Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has decided not to issue building permission or clearance certificates (CC) to people who don't clear their property tax dues in full.

Earlier, people would get permission by showing slips of partial payment of property tax. Now, HDMC has decided that only after complete clearance of property tax would it be possible to give the CC. GK Ganjigatti, deputy director of town planning department HDMC, told STOI, "We will enter the property identification number (PID) of the person who comes to get building permission into our system and it'll show how much property tax is pending. Even he has a Re 1 balance of property tax, the system will not generate building permission challan for the person."

"I hadn't paid Rs 19 property tax due to a change problem. When I came to get building clearance certificate, I couldn't get a CC without paying this balance," said a businessman.

Karnatak region expects more aid from new govt

BS Reporter/Chennai/ Dharwad 20 May 13 | 12:42 AM

Quote:
With the Congress forming the new government headed by Siddramaiah in Karnataka, the people in North Karnataka are hoping that several issues haunting the region would be resolved.

The project of diverting the water from Kalasa and Banduri streams to Malaprabha to solve the problem of drinking water is a key issue the people expect to be solved. The Goan government has put a hurdle to the implementation of the Kalasa Banduri Nala project by approaching the Supreme Court saying that the project would be detrimental to the interest of Goa.

The Congress leaders in North Karnataka who have actually envisioned the scheme have an opportunity now to exert pressure on Goa government through the Central government and get the issue resolved, said farmers leader Vijay Kulkarni who has led the agitation for the implementation of the project.

Another issue that needs the initiation and action by the state government is getting Hubli-Dharwad included in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The Union ministry of urban development has been working on inclusion of more cities for development under the JNNURM and the people in Hubli-Dharwad are expecting the twin cities to be included in the list. In the absence of political pressure from the state the twin cities had missed out on the chance last time. The citizens want the elected representatives from Karnatak cutting across party barriers to put pressure on the Centre to include Hubli-Dharwad for the implementation of the project.

Earlier, the Planning Commissioner had rejected the states proposal to include 28 cities having a population of 500,000 under the JNNURM citing resource constraints as a challenge.

The Union Ministry of Urban Development has proposed to include 28 cities or urban agglomerations with population of 500,000 and above under the Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) of the JNNURM. Hubli-Dharwad is emerging as the second cultural and commercial hub of Karnataka and JNNURM could change the face of the twin city completely. If included Hubli-Dharwad could get assistance to the tune of Rs 500 crore in course of seven years and develop the infrastructure.

This would enable to attract investments and generate employment opportunities.

Quote:
Hubli: The Gateway Hotels and Resorts, part of the Taj group of hotels, announced the launch of The Gateway Hotel Lakeside Hubli. This will be the fourth Gateway branded hotel in Karnataka, in addition to the existing hotels at Bengaluru, Mangalore and Chikmagalur. The Gateway Hotels and Resorts caters to the upscale segment and has expanded its footprint in North Karnataka with this launch. With the opening of this hotel, The Gateway Hotels and Resorts now has 22 hotels in its portfolio.

Commenting on the launch, Prabhat Verma, chief operating officer, The Gateway Hotels and Resorts, said, “The launch in Hubli is a proud moment for us and essential to the brand’s growth strategy of catering to the new-age traveller. With this opening, we endeavour to pioneer new and unique destinations. We promise to bring a fresh flavour and style to hospitality in the city. The hotel is located on the arterial road connecting Hubli to Dharwad and is close to the city centre. Spread over nine acres of pristine lush greenery, the hotel sits pretty on the banks of the picturesque Lake Unkal.

The Gateway Hotel Lakeside Hubli has 92 spacious rooms, including four suites, with each room offering serene views of Lake Unkal. Swirl, located at the lobby level overlooking the pool, offers a relaxed and designed ambience with an eclectic lounge space and low seating couches.

Hubli derives its name from Hubbali, meaning a flowering creeper. It is Karnataka’s second largest commercial and industrial hub after Bengaluru. Its twin city, Dharwad, is a much respected seat of higher learning. Hubli is also within touching distance of some of the state’s most scenic and wild terrain. The forested hills of the Malenadu region, the elephant camp at Sakrebyle, world heritage sites in Hampi, Bijapur and Aihole, the beaches at Gokarna or Goa are just some of the many getaways located close to the city.
