Some nice projects there. Nottingham seems to be getting tons of investment right now.

I have to say, your lowrise stuff is more interesting than London's lowrise stuff. Down here, they churn out the same bland, corporate glass boxes every time, with a total lack of imagination in the designs. Nottingham's on the other hand seem to have a lot more variety, better use of colour, form, texture, etc.

You could do with some taller projects though. When d'you think you'll get your first skyscraper?

I think its somebody being given the "keys to the city" or something like that. Pretty lavish. Can't believe what went to make way for the Westworld building!

Great work with this thread Dan.

From the EP Today... I like people with visions...

Quote:
Derek Brewer, chief executive Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club

"Sport and participation in sport is huge for Nottingham," said Mr Brewer.

He believes sport can encourage inclusion in society and the city's top venues, like Trent Bridge, are inspirational.

The club recently took part in a sports project with young people from Bulwell and Mr Brewer said: "I saw the untapped potential of what we have. What it can do to inspire people is amazing. I think Trent Bridge has a huge part to play."

The cricket man is heavily involved in fledgling plans to turn Nottingham into a City of Sport, which have the backing of the national body, Sport England. The aim, again, is to boost participation.

Alongside that he has a vision for the development of Trent Bridge.

He said: "They have put up permanent floodlights, as we will do this winter, and they have combined heritage, history and modernity. It is a stadium to aspire to."

KEN GRUNDY, entrepreneur, property developer, and deputy chairman of Nottingham Regeneration Limited

He believes the physical development of the city is a key part of Nottingham's future.

He highlights the Lace Market as an area of successful regeneration with Eastside, the Meadows Gateway and Waterside to come.

Mr Grundy points to Leeds and Manchester as two cities that lead the way for Nottingham.

He said: "My daughter was at university in Leeds 12 years ago. The area between the motorway and the railway station was virtually derelict, now it is a proper extension of Leeds. It is an eclectic mix of glass buildings, square buildings, tall buildings.

"It is due to dynamic leadership. We have to formulate a plan and stick to it."

His slogan for the city is: "Nottingham: Have a bit."

ANDREW FOX, manager of the Crowne Plaza Hotel and chairman of the Branding Panel at Experience Nottinghamshire

Andrew Fox is a Geordie but he loves living in Nottingham.

"I like the quality of life," he said. "I like the open spaces like Wollaton Park and the Old Market Square, the compact city centre, and the restaurant and bar scene is very good."

As an incomer, who is married to a Notts girl, Mr Fox says he wants to see more successful local people stay and work here and thinks Nottingham could learn something from his hometown of Newcastle.

"The river could play a greater part," said Mr Fox. "Newcastle has maximised it. They have developed historical buildings into art venues and created a European city. They have really harnessed the river. In Liverpool, too, they have made the most of the water front. In Nottingham the river is underdeveloped."

GILES CROFT, artistic director of The Playhouse, Nottingham

He highlights Barcelona as an example of what can be achieved by setting out to develop both the physical and cultural nature of a city. In the last 15 years, since it hosted the Olympics in 1992, Barcelona has developed a "fantastically rich and vibrant culture."

In Nottingham, he believes more could be achieved through the arts and city's cultural offerings. He would like to see a "coherent cultural strategy", which brings together everything Nottingham already has in terms of theatre, music, dance, culture, and entertainment; identifies and encourages investment, and sets out an ambitious programme for development.

Mr Croft thinks Nottingham could gear up to bid to become the European City of Culture as a statement of our confidence and ambition. "You do not have to succeed to benefit," he said.

PETER BROOKER, public affairs director, Experian

"When you look at buzzing European cities which have reinvented themselves and regenerated their economy, I'm always inspired by a visit to Prague," said Mr Brooker.

"A recent Experian report suggests that Nottingham has actually already got some of the ingredients right; we've begun to reinvent ourselves and diversify from our old roots in manufacturing. We're now seen as one of only a handful of cities outside the South East that will be delivering robust economic growth over the next decade - a potential beacon city!

"It can be a city renowned for helping people succeed in life, where you come if you want a new idea to take root and take off and where our people and their skills are what people comment on."
He's right...we need to develop right along the river all the way down to trent bridge... create a vibrant and cultural area to the city.... And then bid for the European City f Culture

Then agian we could leave it there for the foreigners to quickly see whats going off?
