Fuji Electric pledges RM1.4b investment
By Marina Emmanuel Published: 2008/08/01
BusinessTimes

Quote:
The chipmaker's additional investment of RM1.4 billion is to meet increased demand for its semiconductor operations at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, says Fuji's chief

FUJI Electric Device Technology Co Ltd of Japan has pledged to invest a total of RM1.4 billion in Kedah over nine years.

This is in addition to the RM1 billion invested in the northern state since 1999.

Fuji Electric (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Kozo Katarao said the additional investment is to meet increased demand for its semiconductor operations at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

"Our expanded presence and that of other multinational corporations in Kulim is testimony to the attractiveness of this country as a manufacturing base for the electronics industry," he told reporters after Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak opened the company's RM600 million semiconductor wafer fabrication plant at the park.

"From now until 2017, we plan to invest an additional RM1.4 billion in our operations here," Katarao said.

The new double-storey plant, Fuji Electric's second facility in Kulim, houses fully-integrated production lines from wafer chip production to insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) assembly.

"The new plant is expected to deliver initially some 50,000 IGBT modules per month, using highly sophisticated and automated processes," Katarao said.

"This output is only about six per cent of Fuji Electric Device Technology's total production. We aim to produce about 300,000 units per month by 2010."

Fuji Electric Device Technology senior director Kuniaki Yanagisawa said the impact of growing demand within and outside Japan for advanced power electronic applications is huge.

"Our estimates show that we will need to produce 150,000 IGBT modules per month and eventually double the volume to meet market needs," he said.

Meanwhile, Azizan said the Kedah authorities have been making plans to expand the Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

"We intend to launch the fourth phase of the park as soon as possible to accommodate new investors and cater for the needs of existing tenants," he said.

The Kedah state government has allocated RM100 million to Kulim Technology Park Corp for the acquisition of 180ha and construction of infrastructure.

KTPC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kedah state development arm Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah, serves as the developer and manager of the technology park.

Fuji invests RM700m in Kulim chip plant
Source: The Star

KULIM: Fuji Electric Device Technologies is investing RM700mil to set up a semiconductor plant in Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP).

The new plant would make high-voltage power transistors used in elevators and motorcycles, said its president Akira Takai.

He said this after the launch of the group's second RM1bil new magnetic disk plant in KHTP by Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid yesterday.

“These power transistors will be shipped to our customers in Japan and other countries,” he added.

Takai said the Fuji Electric group was finalising plans for the project, slated to kick off later this year.

“Initially, we will use some of the vacant buildings in the present 55-acre site where our two plants are located,” he said.

Takai said the magnetic disk manufacturing plant was the biggest overseas investment ever by the group.

“The plant is equipped with eight media and 13 aluminium substrate polish lines with automated processes, advanced sputtering machines from the US, and an automated state-of-the-art clean room,” he said.

Takai said the new plant would double the production capacity of Fuji Electric's local operations to 6.4 million large capacity magnetic disks monthly.

The 80- and 120-gigabyte magnetic disks are used in computers, consumer electronic devices for recording, playing, and storing digital data.

Since 1996, Fuji Electric group has invested RM1.7bil in KHTP.

RM410m expansion plan for Kulim Hi-Tech Park
Thursday, August 07, 2008

AN INTERNATIONAL school, two hotels, medical facilities for chemical-related injuries and a edicated police station are among the amenities being planned under the fourth phase of the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah.

Kulim Technology Park Corp (KTPC) group chief executive officer Dato Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin said the federal government had earlier this year allocated RM145 million for the fourth phase of the science park, which covers 156ha.
'A fifth phase covering 422ha was also announced with a RM265 million allocation,' he told Business Times.

Ahmad Shukri said the park's third phase - which covers 172ha - can accommodate another five new tenants and then it will be full. He said the ELC International School is scheduled to begin in September and teachers and staff are currently being shortlisted.

'Construction work on a two-to three-star category hotel, boasting 100 rooms, is expected to take off by the end of this year with development costs tagged at RM40 million,' Ahmad Shukri said, adding the proposed hotel project will be carried out by Alor Star-based property developer MBAS Jaya Sdn Bhd.

The proposed hotel will take around one-and-a-half years to be completed.
Also on the drawing board is a 200-room new hotel.

Meanwhile, a RM5 million two-storey hostel is also being planned in Phase 4 of the park.

The 31-bedroom hostel, for which construction will begin by the end of this year, will be managed by KTPC, which oversees the management of the park.
Ahmad Shukri also said that plans are afoot to meet the human resource needs of the park's tenants.

'A more concerted skills development centre at the park is being worked out with the cooperation of the Northern Corridor Implementation Agency and the Kedah Industrial Skills and Management Development Centre,' he added.

NDEC lancar pusat data RM135j di KHTP
Friday, August 22, 2008
Oleh OPAT RATTANACHOT
Source from Utusan Online.

KULIM 22 Ogos - The Northen Data Exchange Centre Sdn. Bhd.

Cadang bina lapangan terbang

Oleh OPAT RATTANACHOT

KULIM 4 Dis.

Mimos plans to raise headcount at Kulim Hi-Tech
By Marina Emmanuel Published: 2009/03/18

MIMOS Bhd, a research agency, plans to hire more people as it expands operations at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) in Kedah and in Kuala Lumpur.

Its president and chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah said Mimos will raise headcount at KHTP by 80 per cent, while operations in Technology Park Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, will see a 10 per cent increase by year-end.

Mimos employs 545 people and 95 per cent of them are based in Kuala Lumpur.

"We are optimistic about making a presence in the northern region as well as create new job opportunities to support the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) via our KHTP expansion," he told Business Times.

Mimos' northern branch at the technology park will be officially launched next month.

Mimos-KHTP serves as a software centre for all precision agriculture products, providing the full value-chain to the agriculture sector in the northern region.

Precision agriculture products include gadgets like sensors that help farmers to monitor their crops, among others.

"Mimos-KHTP also trains the indigenous industries and creates entrepreneurs in precision agriculture."

Vacancies are for senior positions in technology and research field.

"Mimos is always in search of world-class talents and believes that our local talent has the right competency to contribute," said Abdul Wahab.

"It is also our priority to target Malaysians overseas with the relevant experience to come home and serve the nation, in line with the Brain-Gain programme under the initiative of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation."

Due to the nature of the research and development activities, Mimos needs unique skills and this is why 5 per cent of its staff are foreign professionals.

US firm Entegris to make Kulim its biggest output base
Thursday, May 14, 2009
Source: http://www.khtp.com.my/news/default.asp?NewsID=116

Bertrand Loy.. We plan to spend RM40mil to
RM50mil to upgrade the KHTP plant.

Nasdaq-listed Entegris Inc aims to make its Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) facility the group’s largest manufacturing centre by the year-end.

Group chief operating officer Betrand Loy said to achieve this, the group was now accelerating the transfer of its manufacturing and non-manufacturing activities for semiconductor protective material products to the facility.

“We plan to spend between RM40mil and RM50mil to upgrade the KHTP plant over the next two years. To date, Entegris has invested about RM210mil in the facility.
Bertrand Loy ... ‘We plan to spend RM40mil to RM50mil to upgrade the KHTP plant’

“We will also raise the headcount at the KHTP facility to 750, from the present 488, in 2010 when the semiconductor industry is expected to recover,” he told StarBiz.

About 15% of the new staff to be hired in 2010 would be engineers and technical personnel, he added.

Loy said that by the year-end, the KHTP plant would accommodate some 30% of the group’s staff of 2,300 worldwide.

“This year, we plan to bring over manufacturing and support activities for six to seven new products to KHTP,” he added.

These products include a new range of gas filters and purifiers, wafer process carriers and micro-environment and reticle pods used to control contamination in the manufacturing processes of the semiconductor industry.

“We expect the utilisation of wafer fabrication capacity in the global semiconductor industry to reach 80% to 90% in early 2010,” he said.

Loy said the first quarter saw a 70% drop in global semiconductor business compared with the same period a year earlier.

“The semiconductor sector reached its peak in the second quarter of 2008. We expect business to pick up in the second and third quarter of this year,” he said.

Loy said Entegris was slowly shrinking its operations in the United States and shifting them to Kulim.

Entegris now has manufacturing and service centres in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Texas, and Colorado, as well as in France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

“At present, the group’s research and development (R&D) work is done in the United States and Japan, with some design and development works for products supporting data storage already established in KHTP.

“But we want to transfer a fair share of such activities to Malaysia, so that the R&D work can be close to the manufacturing activities in KHTP,” he said.

Loy said the transfer of the R&D capability was to reduce time on product development and to respond faster to customers’ needs.

“Currently, more than 50% of our sales come from Japan and (other parts of) Asia. Some 9% of the group’s revenue will be spent on R&D this year,” he added.

To train the necessary skilled workers for the KHTP facility, Entegris has taken part in the Northern Corridor Industrial Technical Enhancement Scheme.

Entegris (Kulim) plant manager Chai Eng Leng said that under the programme, the company had taken in 10 fresh graduates since last year for training at the KHTP facility.

“These graduates will undergo a one-year internship with Entegris. After that, we will decide whether to hire them, based on their performance. We will take in 15 more fresh graduates this year,” he said.

Kulim Landmark mula operasi 26 Jun
