What do you think of this downtown Waterloo office project that...

...sadly never happened... Maybe some day.. Anyways, I thought you office-tower-loving TO forumers would be interested

So what do you think?...

-was going to be built around 2001
-designed by Joseph Bogdan Associates Inc.
-was to be part of the Commons of Waterloo project in Uptown Waterloo on Caroline St.
-was going to replace a parking lot that still exists
-office space market went cold and the developer backed out
-the site is still zoned for a building up to 25 storeys tall
-12,000 sq. ft. of ground retail was planned; city rejected plans to increase it to 20,000
-would have meant the beginning of the pedestrianisation of Caroline St., which is downtown but is very car-oriented

The building in the background is office space, previously a museum and restaurant... just so you know

Would have certainly added to Waterloo's (small and cheesy) skyline.

That's a nice design, simple and elegant. Too bad it was cancelled.

I love the slabs of stone at the bottom, the retail being incorporated, and the design... (I believe the top would have been a slight curve like an airplane hangar)... plus it would be rising out of parks and parking lot-type areas so it would have really stood out and led the way for a new streetscape along Caroline St...

yeah, in toronto that would be nothing special. i think in waterloo, kitchener, london, windsor ect a nice project like that is pretty special considering the usual crap they build. tricar and such. thats a nice building, but it would be a shame to build it on land zoned for 25 stories

I really like that design. It's a shame it was never built, Waterloo could use something like that. Downtown Waterloo is weak, even with these new updates, its nothing more then a big strip mall and ghost town.

I sure don't think it's a ghost town at all... Lately it's been busier than ever, that is until it got so cold... but it's doing quite well.

We don't NEED height... I mean, the only reason they didn't build it was LACK of demand...

What Waterloo needs is more glassy towers. Actually all Ontario cities could use a glassy boost. There's is too much contrete crap around with little or no windows - bring on the floor to ceiling glass buildings like Manulife Centre.
