The CSO and NISRA have joined forces to produce a fascinating census of the whole island covering the period up to 2011. Given that both the Republic and Northern Ireland (as part of the UK) were conducting censuses within weeks of each other three years ago, the two statistical agencies decided that it might be enlightening and interesting to combine the results to give an overall view of the economic, social and political situation of the island as a whole.

- Northern Ireland, particularly along the Antrim and North Down coasts, is a lot older than the rest of Ireland.
- The Republic's share of the island's population is back to the highs last seen a hundred years ago after losing relative ground to the North
- Divorce is much more common in NI and with that lone parent households.
- The North is a lot more irreligious than the Republic outside of Dublin, Cork and Galway
