Hi

Well done to Oldham Athletic who beat Burton Albion 3-1 in FA Cup First Round and also to Macclesfield Town who also won 3-0 today against non-league team East Thurrock (who every they are) and both team are only one cup win away to meet the big teams in third rounds, but unlucked to Bury, Crewe and Rochdale who lost they cup game todays and also well done to Hyde and Stalybridge who are flying high in Blue Square Bet North.

Hi

I notice in FA Cup Third round draw the some very good ties in there.

Manchester City vs Manchester United
Fleetwood v Blackpool (If Fleetwood beat Yeovil in replay)
Macclesfield v Bolton (If Macclesfield beat non league Chelmsford in replay)
Liverpool vs Oldham (if Oldham beat Southend in Replay)

To me that the pick of them for sure Liverpool vs Oldham match

Oldham Athletic miss a chance to go to Wembley last monday as they lose 3-1 on Agg to Chesterfield in Johnstone Paint Trophy, elsewhere Hyde United are still got good chance to be promotion and even Champion to Blue Square Bet Conference Premier as they are 12 points ahead at top of table, also Stalybridge have also got good chance to get promotion to Blue Square Bet Conference Premier but they need to start winning games.

As a lad growing up in and living in and around Manchester (Ashton, Broadbottom, Glossop, Longsight/Victoria Park, West Didsbury, City Centre and back to Glossop) and as a United fan and as a nerdy scientific type I'd always wondered about the inflamatory statement that most 'proper' Mancs are City fans.

For what it's worth growing up here I always felt it was a pretty even split amongst 'proper' Mancs, and indeed it felt pretty even across greater Manchester generally (though Glossop possibly felt like it edged Blue). That said based on the replica shirts you see at my kids football training United have held sway with the youngsters, though that is balancing up again now.

Anyway a London mate of mine, who recently moved to Glossop (yes, really) reignited the debate by saying he got the impression most Mancs were city fans (indeed he has adopted City as he second team after Spurs, or third, if you include Glossop North End) and that made me determined to find some proper authoratative statistical evidence on the subject.

Because surely something that matters so much to so many people (enough to have started thousands if not millions of pub arguments, and probably a few fights too) would have been properly and rigorously researched by some person or organisation desperate for the spotlight their findings would bring? Weirdly no, the only major independent study I could find was this one which was produced in 2002 for Manchester Metropolitan University:

http://www.e-space.mmu.ac.uk/e-space...-%20brown1.pdf

It's quite a fascinating document, and may suprise some people. In short a higher percentage of season tickets holders at City come from Manchester poscodes, as opposed to United (40% as opposed to 29%, maybe a price of United's profile pulling in more fans from a wider catchment to fill a bigger stadium). But, in absolute terms, more people from Manchester postcodes who buy season tickets choose United over City (7,808 as opposed to 6,678).

In even shorter form more of United fans aren't Mancs, but more Mancs are United fans.

You can argue about methodology (Manchester postcodes as opposed to 'true' City of Manchester, season ticket holders not been truly representative of a fan base etc) but I think it's a decent study. All quite close and not much in it (though enough to still point-score and argue about if you so desire!) and it also shows that both clubs pull a very similar percentage of their season ticket holders from the wider North West.

I know that's slightly off topic from the core point of the thread but it provides some useful context to the debate/poll and of course fuel for the next pub debate!

Cheers

Thom

Hi All

Congratulation to Hyde United Football club as they are Blue Square North Champions after they beat Boston United 4-1 and Guiseley's lose 1-0 to Bishop's Stortford, mean Hyde will be played in the Blue Square premier from next season.

Macclesfield Town could be playing Hyde United next season in the Blue Square Premier if the lose to Burton Albion next Saturday and Barnet win against Wimbledon

Rochdale have been relegated from League One today after they lose to Chesterfield 2-1 mean they will be playing in League Two from next season

Good grief, i keep forgetting Stockport are there as well.

Aye the North East Cheshire Super League.

All it needs is for Stalybridge to get up via the play offs.

I believe Hyde have an even smaller fan base than Droyladen, partly as some supporters were put off by the massive alleged MCFC swallowing up of the Tigers.

Tonight, The Mighty Stalybridge Celtic are in the Cheshire Senior Cup final versus Nantwich Town. Though the cup competition lacks the hyperbole of the FA Cup, FA Trophy or FA Vase, it is one of great importance to the 'Bridge and other Cheshire sides.

Should Stalybridge Celtic beat the Dabbers [Nantwich Town], it'll be their first Cheshire Senior Cup final win since 2001, and only the third time they would have lifted that trophy.

Kick-off for the match is at 7.45pm, taking place at The Deva Stadium, Chester. If you're unable to make it to Chester, there is full match commentary on www.redshiftradio.co.uk - Nantwich's local radio station.

Sadly or thankfully the Saints-Oldham game is not beng played at Whitebank.

Simply and regretably because it is a kip.

We were all led to believe that if the Roughyeds ever got a prime tie, then Boundary Park would be available, but obviously that is not the case.

You can only hope that Oldham receive a good gate from the game and put it towards redeveloping Whitebank into a stadium fit for the tradition of the club, the game and for tier two RL.
