Demolition begins in Channelside, paving way to Water Street

By: Walter Allen, FOX 13 News

VIDEO POSTED: NOV 20 2017 10:07AM EST

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The transformation of downtown Tampa is beginning.

Demolitions teams have been leveling the southwest section of the Channelside Plaza as the Water Street project is underway.

"It will be the largest coordinated downtown construction project next year in the U.S., very excited about that. 4 million square feet of development will break ground next year. That is the equivalent of, essentially, 7 office towers in downtown Tampa." James Nozar, C-E-O of Strategic Property Partners told Fox 13 News....

Article states that two hotels and 1200 residential units will be under construction next year. Even with 300 units in each building in what was already announced for 815 Water St, that should mean at least another two towers will start next year. Hopefully by the end of the year all of Phase 1 will be going.

It also says theres going to be 20 cranes at one time so to me that means more than just you know five or six towers maybe possibly more than that. And also a good note about the article was that most of that first phase is going to be done before the 2021 Super Bowl. Notice that USF Medical and Related both have 2 cranes.

In Charlotte they are building something very familiar to Water Street 815 but a little smaller scale and it has two cranes.

I believe this is the first render to show a tower on the lot they purchased on the other side of the Selmon, to the northeast of Aurora. Seems like they plan to have the second tallest tower there.

Also first time seeing any improvements to the arena garage I believe, I may be incorrect though.

Looks great, but not too sure about the sod over the top of Amalie though.

Its all about the green.
Tampa Mike. I think your correct. North of Selmon expressway is not quite in the path of that stupid little airport. Peter O Knight. I might be wrong but I believe Del Villar is also a little more North than the rest of the all that Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Waterstreet.

Del Villar is pretty far south in ChannelSide. It all has to do with LoS from PoK and apparently it is non-negotiable. I'm okay with it. I'd rather see many short buildings with activity on the streets than a few talls with nothing going on down below.

Would be interesting to see a rendering that includes the Grand Central projects planned as well.

SPP is prom airing their project and how it compliments whatís already built. Theyíre marketing Water Street. No developer is going to promote their competitors unbuilt projects. Itís still a business and the others are competitors.

Think Brian is just speaking in general he would like to see a rendering of all the projects. I donít think heís saying that he wants SSP to do it.

May be related somewhat. Lightning are in talks to stay in Tampa until 2037. In return, Vinik is asking the county for $61 million upgrades and maintenance. Although itís not mentioned what upgrades will be funded with this possible agreement, itís more than likely that some of it will go towards the east side expansion we have been seeing in the renderings of Water Street.

Looks like MOSI location subtly hinted at being next to Amalie and TB History Center, with the previously unknown 'cultural' spot N. of the project, being a new art building of some sorts.

Quote:
The Museum of Science and Industry's new home in downtown Tampa could be between Amalie Arena and the Tampa Bay History Center.

The latest rendering of Water Street Tampa, released Monday evening, shows new development on either side of Amalie Arena. The building shown to the east of the arena is the potential new location for MOSI, Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik said Tuesday.
Quote:
A new "art institution" is planned for the northern end of the district, for a cultural anchor there, Vinik said.

Vinik announces plans for innovation hub, $20M venture capital fund in downtown Tampa

By Ashley Gurbal Kritzer
Senior Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal

Dec 5, 2017, 2:40pm EST

Jeff Vinik is planning to open an "innovation hub" within Channelside Bay Plaza, a massive space that could bring hundreds of people, from entrepreneurs to venture capitalists, to a currently moribund corner of downtown Tampa.

Vinik and his real estate development company, Strategic Property Partners, are in the design phase of the innovation hub, which could occupy 40,000 to 75,000 square feet on the second floor of the remaining portion of Channelside Bay Plaza....

The one thing I don't like in the renderings is the shorter builder immediately to the west of the arena, in between the arena and the new hotel planned. When you go to the existing plaza now I like the open view to the water and Harbour Island, which looks like it will be gone or have a much more narrow opening in the future.

I'm interested in that floating platform over the water by the park. I don't think I ever noticed that before. I wonder if that is a for sure thing
