Sakhir City

Hey, well finally they release a rendering, I can just imagine drivin there and seein this in the future, enjoy:

PLANS for a Sakhir City to be built around the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) are now in their final stages. The city is expected to include at least one hotel, a motorsport-themed restaurant, retail outlets, an automobile factory and other motor industry related features. BIC general manager Martin Whitaker said plans for Sakhir City were now in the final stages and once finalised the BIC would be approaching investors.

Mr Whitaker said more and more international companies were looking to establish a base in the Middle East and the Grand Prix had shown that Bahrain was open for business.

With this interest, he said, the BIC realised they could develop a centre of excellence around the circuit.

"We will consider building a hotel at the circuit," Mr Whitaker told the GDN.

"We have had 296 events so far this year and the more activities at the BIC the more we need accommodation.

"This is not taking anything away from the five-star hotels, but for some it is more sensible to be located near here.

"Some will still want to go to the five-star hotels and restaurants, but we want to establish the infrastructure here.

"There will perhaps be a themed motorsport restaurant, retail outlets and other things, but it's all in the planning stages."

One automobile company has already put its stake in the ground by signing an agreement with the BIC to build a factory and showroom at the site.

Under the agreement Germany-based Ruf Automobiles GmbH, who build performance road cars such as the Porsche Ruf, will build and sell their cars from the site.

Buyers will have the opportunity to order their car, see it being built and then even test drive it at the BIC, said Mr Whitaker.

He said this was the first factory to be built outside of Germany and the architecture of the building would mirror that of the BIC.

The agreement, he added, would also create jobs for locals.

The ground-breaking ceremony will be held during the first week of next month.

"This shows an example of the type of companies we are attracting, we are also talking to other companies about similar projects.

"We are working much more closely with companies that will have an economic impact on the island.

"Bahrain is a good place to base yourself, it's a great location geographically and in terms of time zones, we have a great transport hub and freight facilities.

"People in Bahrain and the region don't fully appreciate the standards and facilities we have here. This is the leading circuit in the world.

"The people here make the difference, the friendliness and nothing is too much trouble. That's why we won the award for best Grand Prix circuit in 2004."

Mr Whitaker would not reveal any more details about the project but said that the investment would be "considerable".

Meanwhile, Mr Whitaker said the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix to be held from March 10 to 12 next year would feature a celebrity race, laser shows and possibly a music concert starring a well-known celebrity.

With regards to whether or not the BIC was making money he said investment in the circuit would be repaid over time.

"Investment in the circuit was made to get the Grand Prix here," he said.

"This investment has achieved a huge amount of revenue for Bahrain. It's put Bahrain on the map.

"For one weekend every year we are the focal point of the sporting world, the Grand Prix is the hook we can sell the rest of the year on."

is there a significance to the "city" part of it or is it an actual city?

Well it'll be like a motor city, everythin related to cars, races, etc.

About the egg-shaped, I have no idea, I don't know what's what yet.

I like the idea and think there is much need for it, but I would have preferred if they carried along with the modern-arabian theme in which the track was constructed. The two being so close together should at least have the same design.

I don't think so, but Herman had a similar idea, but they were talkin about this even before Herman came into the picture. I remember if am not wrong, Sheikh Fawaz was talkin after the first race, somethin like that about this.

I actually like the contrast between new (this) and old (circuit) architecture.

The Bahrain International Circuit has until recently been a rather lonely and desolate place but on December 2 work will begin on the construction of Sakhir City, a business park next to the circuit. This is expected to include at least two hotels. Bahrain is busy marketing itself as a conference venue to build on the investment made with the racing circuit and as part of that programme the organisers say that they are going to push down the price of hotels at the Grand Prix. For the last couple of years hotel rooms in Bahrain have been the most expensive of all the races. That dubious honour now goes to Canada although Monte Carlo remains a strong contender.

If we can make use of the Sakhir area, we can easily generate billions and the GDP will grow crazily.
