MEA to acquire five Airbus planes in 2019

MEA chairman Mohammad Hout announced that the national carrier will receive five new Airbus 321 jets in the summer of 2019 in a bid to beef up its fleet.

Hout made this announcement in the general assembly meetings of the Arab Air Carriers Organization which was held in Sharjah, UAE.

“Before the summer of 2019, the company will receive five new Airbus 321,” he said.

But the chairman did not disclose the value of the contract or how will it be financed.

Hout added that MEA has put in place a system to receive Lebanese expatriates and diaspora in the Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

At present, MEA has 18 Airbus planes that fly to over 28 destinations.

The company has been expanding gradually after the successful restructuring plan that was directly supervised by Hout.

The Central Bank controls 99 percent of MEA’s shares.

Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh said earlier that he intends to submit a proposal to list 25 percent of MEA’s shares in the capital market once it is officially formed.

Salameh explained that the listing of MEA’s share is part of a drive to privatize the company in the future.

On the future vision of Middle East, after the achievements of the past years, Hout said “We always wish that Lebanon continues to enjoy security, stability and peace so that we can overcome this difficult stage, especially because we had previously gone through a series of tough and difficult periods since 2002 and managed to overcome the ramification of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005 as well the fallout of the Israeli aggression on Lebanon in 2006.”

Hout stressed that MEA as always ready to provide better services once Lebanon enjoys a further prosperity and peace. He also talked about the new advanced aviation training center opened by MEA in October.

Hout also revealed that MEA planned to form another low-cost airline that would offer low ticket prices to the passengers in the future.

But he did not say when the new company would be created.

“We will launch the new company at the right time,” Hout said.

On the subject of competition with other airlines operating in Lebanon and whether this would impact the national company, Hout said: “We welcome the competition and the open skies policy pursued by the Lebanese government. Here we confirm the positions of Public Works and Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos on this matter.”

Hout said the effects of the regional crisis on MEA were very limited.

He added that MEA planned to have a direct flight to Madrid before the summer season.

As for profits, Hout said that MEA had made accumulated profits of $1 billion over the past 15 years.

125? Seems like a big number...

Fenianos Signs Decree Appointing 125 Individuals as Air Traffic Controllers

Public Works and Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos on Tuesday said he signed a decree appointing 125 individuals who had passed admission exams as air traffic controllers.

Fenianos said at a press conference that the “decree will be implemented after the signing of President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the related minister or ministers.”

“We have to take into consideration that air traffic to Syria is halted. We will have to watch it when it resumes,” he added.

"There are vacancies at the airport and we will solve this problem to prevent any possible security breach," the minister added.

Air transport to and from Lebanon creates economic benefit, one of them is an expectation that “it will generate revenues worth $400 million in four years. The terminal is currently making only $100 million,” according to Fenianos.

Screenshots from the video

Notice the remote stands on the grass (of the old runway that's now a taxiway)
and is the building really gonna get THAT much bigger (looks like it'll be right after the 'taxi driver' secondary checkpoint)
