SHANGHAI, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and Shanghai's City Council deputy secretary-general Hong Hao on Friday performed the ground-breaking ceremony for Malaysia's pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo here.

The pavilion, with the theme of "1Malaysia: Harmonised City Living" will be completed by the year end.

Dr Ng said Malaysia's theme was in tune with the expo theme, "Better City, Better Living", as it showcased the strengths of Malaysia's city living.

"When it comes to city living, people want good quality of life. Therefore, the concept of the pavilion portrays Malaysia's harmonious multicultural society, elements of nature, modern facilities and the nation's achievements," she told Malaysian reporters after the ground-breaking ceremony.

Dr Ng said Malaysia's pavilion would also showcase the country's various tourist attractions, services and products, as the aim was not just to promote its tourism industry but also as a destination for trade and investment.

As such, she said, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) would take charge of showcasing the latest developments of Malaysian products such as palm oil, rubber, electronic goods and timber.

Dr Ng said the design of the pavilion combined cultural and heritage elements, including Negeri Sembilan's architectural design, with modernity.

The 3,000-square metre Malaysia Pavilion is expected to receive 10,000 to 15,000 visitors daily, during the World Expo to be held from May 1 to Oct 31 next year.

Metro Line 7 opening slowed
11 November 2009
Shanghai Daily

CITY'S Metro Line 7 is likely to have its announced November opening delayed because a quarter of its stations are still unfinished.

Seven stations out of the line's 28 are not ready, Metro officials said yesterday.

"We cannot rush to a completion concerning all the uncertainties," said Zhu Jingwei, the line's engineer in chief.

He did not give an exact opening time, but said it would be ahead of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Shanghai Shentong Group, the subway operator, told local media in early September the line would run a pilot operation by the end of November.

Shanghai's subway system is one of the fastest-growing in the world. It is planned to be the biggest by 2012. It currently runs eight lines over 250 kilometers of track, carrying nearly 4 million passengers a day.

Line 7 is among three new Metro lines to be put into use before the Expo starts next May, said the authorities.

So far, the other two lines, Line 11 and the second phase of Line 9, have not had their schedule changed.

Line 7 will run through the city's northern Baoshan District to Pudong New Area, with 28 stations opening before the Expo, said the operator. Five more stations will be added after the event.

The line will connect with seven other subway lines on eight stations. Locals and Expo visitors will be able to take the line to the south-east side of the Expo site.

Line 7 is expected to carry about 1 million passengers a day when it's done, second only to existing Line 1 and 2, according to Zhu.
