Rugby Four Nations

Host Nation - England and Wales (UK)

Number of Teams - 4

2011 Four-Nations Snapshot - The 2011 Four-Nations is the 3rd instalment of the highly successful rugby league competition. With the ongoing improvement of 2nd tier nations, the successful Tri-Nations series has been expanded. The Four-Nations will take place in England and Wales in October / November 2011. The dates for the Four Nations are yet to be released.

Each team will play each other once in the pool rounds with the top two nations contesting the final. The Four Nations will run over four weeks. The format will be much like the early World Cup competitions.

The 2010 European Cup winners Wales have secured their place as the fourth team in the 2011 Four Nations. This will be the first time Wales have played in the Tri / Four Nations tournament and caps off a big few years for Welsh rugby league. This is a huge positive for international rugby league as 6 nations would have taken part in the Four Nations when the 2011 tournament kicks off. The RLIF's plan to develop the international game is starting to pay off.

Wales rugby league has been through a rebirth which has seen The Crusaders enter the Super League and the local rugby league competitions drive a big increase in junior participation.

The 2011 Four Nations is shaping up to be the most successful Tri/Four Nations tournament staged to date and will continue with the Rugby League International Federation's (RLIF) plans to strengthen the international game at the top level.

SANZAR boss Greg Peters confirms South Africa will get a sixth Super Rugby franchise

SOUTH African rugby has been given the go ahead to field a sixth Super Rugby franchise from 2016 onwards.

SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters told SuperSport Blitz that the agreement was reached with South African Rugby Union boss Jurie Roux during a meeting held in Sydney.

"We want to retain Super Rugby as the pre-eminent regional tournament in the southern hemisphere and we want to keep it as one competition," Peters told SuperSport.

"There are various options we are looking at to ensure that, but I can confirm that a sixth team from South Africa has been accepted."

South Africa has been rallying for a sixth team after the Lions were forced to sit out last season's Super Rugby competition to make way for Southern Kings. The Lions have subsequently reclaimed their Super Rugby status through a series of promotion-relegation matches against the Kings.

The format of the tournament will have to change to accommodate a sixth South African franchise and all models are currently being discussed.

It is understood that Argentina are lobbying for the inclusion of an Argentine side in order to strengthen the Pumas for the Rugby Championship, while there's also been a move from New Zealand to add a sixth team.

Peters added that an Asian team might be considered, but a final decision will only be made when it's confirmed what model the tournament will adopt going forward.

The Super Rugby competition is currently made up of 15 teams, five each from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
