How does Hamilton have such a dense downtown for such a small city? Looks like Toronto or any big midwest city in some photos.

Yeah... amazing photos!!! Great photography.

Makes me wonder why such a large city gets so little attention in Canada.

VERY underrated natural setting, may I add.

Hamilton has always been one of my favourite cities. But, being about 50-60 kms. west of Hogtown(Toronto's nickname),it gets overlooked.Hamilton is alot less expensive and the traffic is much easier to deal with.Steeltown Rocks On!(But,I do like Toronto because it is much better than smelly overly-rated NYC!)

Hamilton has a very dense downtown because since Hamilton was incorporated as a city in 1846 until the late the 1950's Hamilton was technically "landlocked" from the Harbour to the North, Escarpment to the South, Dundas Valley to the West and the Fruitland to the East. Hamilton was forced to develop up not across the land.

Plus it helped that George Hamilton, the city was named after him, laid out the foundation for downtown Hamilton in the centre of this unique topography setting.

Vehicles weren't able to drive up the Escarpment until the late 1950's so because of that it helped Hamilton intensify. I think Hamilton is the top 4th densest city in Canada.

Some amazing streetscapes...what a pleasant surprise for those of us who have not been there; I had a stopover at the airport once.

These in particular seem to contradict the immediate image many no doubt have of Hamilton:
