கூட்டத்தில் காந்தி மார்க்கெட் வியாபாரிகள் கலந்து கொண்டு தங்களுக்கு தேவையான அடிப்படை வசதிகள் குறித்து பேசினர். இதில் குப்பைகளை தினமும் அள்ள வேண்டும், மார்க்கெட் உள்ளே மாடுகள் வருவதை தடுக்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும், இலவச கழிவறை வசதி வேண்டும் என கோரிக்கை வைத்தனர்.

மேலும் ஆக்கிரமிப்பு பழக்கடைகளை அகற்ற வேண்டும், குடிநீர் குழாய்களில் சாக்கடை நீர் கலந்து வருவதை தடுக்க வேண்டும், இளங்கன்மாரியம்மன் கோவில் இடத்தை பஸ் நிறுத்தமாக மாற்ற வேண்டும், ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை மார்க்கெட்டிற்கு வார விடுமுறை அளிக்க வேண்டும் என்பது உள்பட பல்வேறு கோரிக்கைகளை தெரிவித்தனர்.
இதற்கு பதில் அளித்து கமிஷனர் தண்டபாணி பேசுகையில், இந்த கோரிக்கைகள் அனைத்தும் படிப்படியாக நிறைவேற்றி தர நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும் என தெரிவித்தார். இந்நிலையில் கடந்த முறை கூட்டத்திலும் கோரிக்கைகளை நிறைவேற்றி தருவதாக உறுதி அளித்தும் செய்து தரவில்லை. இந்த முறையும் நிறைவேற்றாவிட்டால் அடுத்தகட்டமாக கண்டன ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்தப்படும் என தெரிவித்தனர்.

கூட்டத்தில் அரியமங்கலம் கோட்ட தலைவர் சீனிவாசன், அனைத்து காய்கனி சில்லறை வியாபாரிகள் முன்னேற்ற சங்க தலைவர் கமலக்கண்ணன், செயலாளர் ஜெகன், பொருளாளர் சுதாகர், கவுரவ தலைவர் பக்கீர்வரிசை உள்பட பலர் கலந்து கொண்டனர். அதனை தொடர்ந்து அரியமங்கலம் கோட்ட வார்டுக்குழு கூட்டம் கோட்ட தலைவர் சீனிவாசன் தலைமையில் நடந்தது. இதில் கவுன்சிலர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

Corporation, traders blame each other for the mess in Gandhi Market



While the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation is mulling over a proposal to renovate the Gandhi Market in the city in a phased manner, a few major problems affecting the market came into focus at a recent meeting with a group of traders’ representatives convened by the mayor and the corporation commissioner.

The market, established in 1940, houses over 725 permanent and pavement shops spread over an area of about six acres, attracting thousands of traders and consumers every day. The market caters not only to the city but also to retail traders from several small and big towns in the neighbouring districts.

The corporation, in recent years, has been struggling to ensure its proper upkeep. Dilapidated shops, worsening sanitary conditions, poor amenities, indiscriminate and rampant encroachments and the perpetual traffic congestion make a visit to the market a harrowing experience. Many brave the conditions to visit the market as they are assured of low prices for vegetables, fruits, and other commodities.

Garbage accumulation remains a major problem. The market generates about 70 tonnes out of the 400 tonnes of solid waste collected by the corporation every day from the city. Although the corporation officials say that the garbage was being transported from the market right through the day, solid waste can be seen strewn all around the market. Motorists have to negotiate a cesspool of garbage and slush in front of the side entrance on the Thanjavur Road. Cattle rummaging the vegetable waste is a common sight.

Traders and corporation officials often indulge in a blame game. While officials and elected representatives find fault with traders of dumping garbage indiscriminately, traders say the civic body has not deployed adequate number of workers to clear the wastes. “Traders should take some responsibility and dump the garbage at the designated places to facilitate regular collection and transportation by garbage trucks.

After all, we are extending the service free of cost to the traders,” says a councillor.

But traders insist that the corporation should lift the garbage regularly and refuse to take responsibility.

“Garbage accumulation is a big problem. But traders cannot be blamed for this and asked to clear the garbage. The corporation should deploy additional staff and consider taking up the cleaning operations during night,” says U.S. Karuppiah, president, Gandhi Market Approved Platform and Permanent Shops Traders United Association. He even suggests that a weekly holiday could be declared for the market to facilitate periodic cleaning.

Many traders point to absence of adequate and clean toilets in and around the market. Though a modern toilet has been built outside and a couple elsewhere in the market, their unhygienic condition has become a deterrent. “People cannot enter the toilets; so bad is the stink. Steps should be taken to clean them regularly. Amenities at the market need to be improved urgently,” says U.S. Kalimuthu, president, Gandhi Market Vyaparigal Kazhagam.

Traders are blamed for the indiscriminate encroachments and elected representatives blame the police for failing to clear encroachers obstructing traffic. Platform vendors occupy a part of the road in front of the market and even a bus shelter.

Consequent to the meeting, corporation officials said additional sanitary workers are to be deployed at the market soon.

Drinking water arrangements have been made. But there are still many unresolved issues and traders hope the corporation will follow up on the initiative.

There are 22 traders associations in the market. Some are sore that the corporation called the traders at short notice and many associations were not represented at the meeting. The Corporation should convene a meeting with all associations to discuss the issues, says Mr. Kalimuthu.

Jayalalithaa announces welfare measures to promote sports

CHENNAI: In an effort to promote sports activities in the state, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced a series of welfare measures, including allocating Rs 5 crore to renovate the tennis stadium at Nungambakkam and establishing an integrated sports complex at Nehru stadium in the city at a cost of Rs 12 crore.

Making a statement in the assembly, the chief minister said the renovation of tennis stadium includes setting up of floodlights, upgrading score boards, establishing VIP rooms and introduction of live telecast facilities. Jayalalithaa said the facelift for Jawaharlal Nehru stadium would include construction of a squash, basketball, volleyball and badminton courts, and construction of a swimming pool for the differently-abled.

In a bid to encourage sports activities in rural areas, Jayalalithaa also announced the introduction of state games for chief minister's trophy on a par with national games. "The winner would bag Rs one lakh cash prize and a gold medal," she said, adding the move would cost the exchequer Rs 2.57 crore every year.

Stating that infrastructure facilities such as lodging and boarding facilities are less for players, who come here to participate in the national sports, the chief minister said the government would construct facilities in Chennai and Trichy at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore each.

Other measures include setting up of gym facilities for secretariat staff at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, enhancing salaries for trainers from Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000, renovating various stadiums in the state at a cost of Rs 5 crore and establishing a separate training academy for National Cadet Corps

Tiruchirappalli civic body to impart training on food safety & hygiene

The Tiruchirapalli Municipal Corporation will start training members of the city's community groups on food safety and hygiene. V P Thandapani, the corporation's commissioner, said this at a valediction of the state-level training programme on detection of food adulteration, co-organised by the Concert Trust (a voluntary organisation) and the Union ministry of consumer affairs.

“It is essential that people are sensitised on the need to prevent adulteration in food products and ensure hygiene. The corporation has formed community groups to take up the maintenance of public toilets and other assets. Training on food safety will be imparted to the members of these groups in association with the Concert Trust,” he added.

It was noted that although the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) has been in existence since 2006, the expected impact of the law has not been felt, owing as much to oppositions from certain sections of the society as to the lack of awareness about the safety of food products. It is widely believed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) laid too much emphasis on food safety.

R Santhanam, former secretary, consumer protection, opined, “In India, which has a low per capita income, people tend to look only at the price and not the quality. Even the affluent are done in by attractive packaging and pricing, and do not enquire about the quality of products. There are several ways to check the adulteration of food, but people are not aware of them.”

The speakers at the function concurred that although the country has always had laws in place to curb adulteration in food, their enforcement has not been strict. However, laws alone would be insufficient to keep the malpractice in check. It is imperative to raise awareness among the people. The absence of information, and not technology, is a constraint in checking adulteration.

The best trainees were felicitated at the valediction, and an exhibition of photographs on food safety was held. R Desikan and G Santhanarajan, the Concert Trust's chairman and director (foods) respectively, addressed the gathering. Consumers were informed that they could lodge complaints with the trust by dialling its helpline number (044-66334346).

Incidentally, the Concert Trust had earlier conducted the training in three phases. In 2011-12, it was held at about thirty-nine places in thirteen districts. It is estimated that over 1,192 women benefited from the programme – they were exposed to various aspects of checking food adulteration.

During the aforementioned training programme, the participants detected adulteration in about 151 food products, and identified about 152 labels as being defective as per the Food Safety and Standards Rules (FSSR), 2011. The matter was subsequently taken up by the food safety commissioners and the controller of legal metrology, who are said to have initiated action.

திருச்சி: முக்கொம்பு கதவணை ஷெட்டர்கள், 4.50 கோடி ரூபாய் மதிப்பீட்டில் புனரமைக்கும் பணி தீவிரமாக நடக்கிறது.
கர்நாடகா மாநிலம் குடகு மலையில் உற்பத்தியாகும் நீர் ஓடும் பகுதியே காவிரி ஆறு. தமிழக எல்லைக்குள் வரும் காவிரி ஆறு, மேட்டூரில் தேக்கி வைக்கப்படுகிறது. கரூர் மாவட்டம் கொடுமுடியில் அகண்ட காவிரியாக மாறி, திருச்சி மாவட்டம் எளமனூர் அருகே முக்கொம்பு என்ற இடத்தில் பிரிகிறது. மூன்று கொம்பு போன்ற வடிவமைப்பில் ஆறு பிரிவதாலே, "முக்கொம்பு' என பெயர் வந்தது.

தொடர் போராட்டம்:

வார்டு எண் 38, 39, 40, 53 ஆகிய நான்கு வார்டுகளும் ஸ்ரீரங்கம் வட்டத்திலிருந்து திருச்சி வட்டத்தில் இணைகின்றன (இந்தப் பகுதி மக்கள்தான் தொடர்ச்சியான போராட்டங்களை நடத்தி வந்தனர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது).

Washerfolk dig deep to sustain livelihood

Severe drought has forced washerfolk, who wash clothes for most of the laundries in the city, to sink deep borewells and build cement troughs on the dry Coleroon riverbed to carry on their trade this summer.

Essentially a flood carrier, the river has not seen any water flow for the past several months leaving the washerfolk literally high and dry this summer. Over 150 families are engaged in the trade and the river is not only their workplace but also their very lifeline.

The monsoon failure has rendered the river bone dry, leaving the washerfolk to scramble to borrow money from private lenders to sink deep borewells for a depth of about 30 to 35 feet on the riverbed and build the washing troughs to sustain their livelihood.

“We have not experienced such severe drought in the past decade. A small stream of water used to flow along the river banks even during the summer enabling us to carry on the trade. But this year, the river has gone totally dry. We had to sink borewells nearly 10 years ago during a similar drought,” recalls Anjalai, who has been engaged in the trade right from her childhood.

The men and women had pooled their money to build the troughs in groups.

“The families had spent about Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000 each to build the troughs, without which we can’t carry on the trade. We have borrowed the money from private lenders,” says Tamilselvam.

The washerfolk are aware that their investment in building the troughs and borewells could go waste as they would most likely be washed away if there were to be heavy water discharge in the river.

“We know the money will go waste. But we have no other go,” says Easwari, a young woman.

The Corporation, at the initiative of the local councillor K.Babu, had sunk a borewell and got a power connection for it too. But the washerfolk say it is not adequate to meet their water requirement.

Hence, some of them have borrowed money to sink nearly half-a-dozen borewells around their workplace spending about Rs.35,000 to Rs.40,000 each.

Each worker contributes Rs.50 a day for using the water pumped from the borewells using diesel motors.

The fisherfolk wash the clothes for laundries at Rs.4 apiece but the limited water availability has impacted on their earnings.

The investments have also pushed up their operational costs.

“If there is water flow in the river, we will wash about 150 clothes a day working in groups of two or three. But now we are able to wash just about 100 pieces a day,” says Easwari, who like several other youngsters have taken to the family trade right from childhood.

“The money we earn is barely enough to pay the interest and keep our families going,” says Selvam.
