Myself I yearn more and more for the 90s when our domestic league was captivating even if flawed and our best players were getting signed by Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, PSV, Chelsea, Galatasaray, Ajax, Koln, Stuttgart, Inter etc...
Seeing 1 or 3 great players head off to big name brand clubs is one thing, but when the bulk of your best talent seemingly has no choice but to leave that can be pretty galling. Look at how many Brazilian friendlies take place in Europe because that's where most of their NT players are employed! Leading up to the World Cup there were numerous articles about how the locals in Sao Paulo et al wished the new venues would help turn the tide and allow more talent to stay put.

As you said it's a matter of balance, because most smaller and/or poorer countries can't hope to compete with the biggest leagues but they do wish their domestic game had greater resources.

Quote:
RE Mexico, they actually lie on the other side of this balance: they have no problem retaining their players because a top Mexican player will be better paid in Mexico than in Spain or Italy ( if you look at their WC 2014 roster they had 15 domestic players out of the 23 man squad, compared to only 3 for Brazil). This becomes an issue in that the players do not progress, which holds the national team back - unsurprisingly Mexico keeps getting described as the most underachieving World Cup country...
Based on what I'm reading and seeing the bulk of Mexican nationals can do well in Mexico because the league has some decent revenue sources, but Liga MX is not able to compete with the top leagues in Europe. They'd love to bring in more of the big names from Latin America but they're not going to get a Neymar or even Fernadinho (sp?). If the cases of Dos Santos and Chicharito are any examples it's simply a matter of current Mexican talent be solid but not exceptional, which is why they've some players who try to sustain careers within Europe's top leagues but often struggle to do so. Similar case for players from the US where outside of a handful of names no one has been able to sustain a starting role for a top club. Cultural differences? Skill levels? Who knows, but the results are what they are.

Today's attendance at Michigan Stadium: 106,811

The streak of home games with more than 100,000 in attendance is now 253 games, dating back to 1975. Many people thought it would come to an end today. Now the only worry seems to be the Miami(OH) game on September 13th.

Wow, what a difference. In Canada, attendance at college football is almost entirely from the student body. Those numbers you posted aren't all that much higher than Canadian student attendance figures.

Therein lies the massive difference in Canadian vs US college football attendance. The sport has grown far beyond the walls of the university in the US, in Canada it's still a collegiate affair almost entirely.

Technically the Hamilton game was a sell out too since that was the maximum amount of tickets allowed to be sold for safety reasons since the stadium isn't complete as yet.
