What's that massive cruise ship docked at North Shields?

If you’re by the coast you may have noticed a very large boat docked in North Shields.

The 15-deck MS Zuiderdam is a Rotterdam-registered cruiseliner which arrived in North Shields at 8am today after sailing from Queensferry Edinburgh this morning. But it won’t be here long, as the 29m long, 57m tall Zuiderdam set sail for Copenhagen at 5pm tonight.

Once in Denmark, the Zuiderdam will embark on a 12-night cruise around the Baltic, calling at the German port of Kiel, Estonia’s capital Tallinn, St Petersburg in Russia, Helsinki in Finland, Stockholm in Sweden, Warnemunde in Germany and then back to Copenhagen.

First launched in 2001, Holland-America Line’s Zuiderdam can carry a maximum of 2,272 passengers. The luxury liner is home to an extensive art collection, featuring pieces by Andy Warhol and Charles Ben. Its showpiece is a Waterford Crystal Seahorse, which is suspended in a three-storey atrium.

MS Zuiderdam cost around $430 million to build and weighs in at 82,05 tones. But the Zuiderdam is not the largest passenger ship to dock in the Tyne.Last August, Holland America’s 99,500 ton, 297.2m long Koningsdam broke the port’s record when it sailed into North Shields.
